To be honest, I've been impressed by the effort and commitment of our lads in the first half. As Guinness Fiend said, we need to keep this in perspective. We've gone from walking it in the Championship to playing one of the best teams in the world at home, and we're doing that with much the same squad and set up as last year MINUS  decent right back and adequate creativity in midfield. To only be 2-0 down at half time isn't as bad as it could have been. That said, its clear we don't have enough to challenge the top teams anymore. The second half tactics will be interesting to see...will Hughton go for damage limitation and ten men behind the ball?

Pretty much this.

Why the fk won't Jonas pass it between two players? he has space and time to do it but just hangs onto it until he gets it taken off him.

Said it sooooooo many time that he is a home player only.

Barton is shit, he will never find the form he had for a while at City, its gone... Nolan is past it.. Perch is so far out of his depth its embarrassing,, Carroll needs close support, we wemt from not sitting back doing exactly that as we had no out ball.

Go with a proper 4-4-2 for fks sake we may as well get slaughtered having a go, fk damage limitations its the first game of the season.

There's a gap in quality, but there's also a gap in confidence. If we were going to get anything, we needed to take advantage of the opportunities that came our way, and that hasn't happened.

We sometimes looked more under pressure when we, rather than they, had possession. We've relaxed a bit, but it's now too late.

Nolan is doing his best, but in this league, and in that position, he's not mobile enough. There was one instance where they gave the ball away to Jonas, and we had the chance of a break. Nolan was ahead of Jonas, but didn't attempt to get forward and give him options. He just stood and watched, like he wanted to stay in position for when the move broke down.

Fucking knee jerk in his thread is beyond a joke. We will not be the only team to be twatted by this scum and to judge individuals on this game beggars belief.

is perch confused about what position he's playing at? does he think we are playing a back three?  jesus christ ..

Wjhatever explanation can explain his turd like qualities??

some some shed some fucking light,

i was fuming for 45 minutes cus this guy just so freacking clueless, he mite as well just stroll around picking his fucking nose jesus..1!!!!!

He's got a lot of ground to cover man, he's a utility man. You ever tried to play 8 positions at once, and sort someone's gas supply out at the same time? Aye thought not.

To be expected really.

You just can't go to teams like Man U and play a pairing of Carroll and Nolan up top and expect anything other than to lose. Man U are playing so high up the pitch because we have absolutely no threat of anything over the top, they're camped in our half and we've not looked like putting five passes together as a result, there's simply no space to play in.

It was a matter of when they'd score, and now it's a matter of how many.

We need mobility up front soon or this will happen a lot this season.

Hopefully the heads don't drop second half, we've given good effort we're just impossibly up against it unfortunately.

Was kind of impressed with Williamson, Carroll and Routledge (in first 20 minutes) but the likes of Perch, Colo, Smith,Nolan and Jonas .. not so much.

We all knew we would lose this, so to read some of the reactions on here... it's just embarrassing.

I see Kevin Nolan is auditioning for the cast of the Invisible Man. He's been utterly abysmal - exactly like he was when we got relegated. He really does offer next to nothing at this level.

:thup:

He's meant to be in a free role, in space when we have the ball and assisting the midfield when we don't. Apart from the first few minutes when he did some closing down he's done neither.

Hiding.

HT.

Not as bad as it could be, some elements of our play have been ok, but we were let down through conceding possession too easily (haphazard clearances and pointless punts to carroll) and getting pegged back in defence too much. obviously the defending for the goals and a couple of chances has been sloppy, but that is bound to happen when you are constantly defending, especially against such good movement, so i won't be too harsh on the individual incidents as i feel the overall pattern of play is ultimately to blame.

we really need to be able to pass it about as a team, if not to create chances then to stop the other side having the ball and making sure that when they do win it back they're in their own half. too many times tonight man utd are picking it up 40 yards from goal which puts them 1 or 2 passes from a chance at any time.

the only way we'll keep possession better is to give some quick, incisive movement off Carroll - at the minute he's totally isolated and needs a Bellamy type. someone with a bit of nous in the Smith role wouldn't go amiss either. Smith is one of the most brainless players ive ever seen, far worse than the likes of Pancrate or Martins ever were. Guthrie is missed, but i wonder if Nolan wouldn't be better off pushed back, he played deep at the back end of last season and showed his best form in that role. in the advanced position he just doesnt have the pace or all round movement to be an outlet to the likes of Carroll or Routledge, whereas he does have some intelligence and passing ability.

Oh and Jonas has been shite as usual. Hurry up Ben Arfa please.

Raylor <-> Perch

Vuckic <-> Nolan

Thx.

That could be a good shout, although I'd like to see Ranger up front with Carroll.  Despite having an awful goals-per-game ratio, he holds the ball up really well and could lay it off to Carroll (and he's a big fooker).  Plus, it'd stop Jonas legging it up the field and running into invisible walls.

We've not played as bad as some are making. There is a big difference in quality between us and them, it's not the end of the world. It's just Man Utd's movement we have to be careful of

Even Andy Gray is acknowledging how well we played the majority of that half. Really surprised at the level of criticism. Absolutely everyone has now jumped on the have a go at Perch bandwagon. Dissapointing really.
