Kevin Keegan's switch to Toon remains England's most sensational transfer ever?

I read that and thought "surely Skirge can't be old enough to remember KK as a player". I never realised you were in your 30s, always thought you were a bairn (no offence).

I thought skirge was older than me (42)

It's strange like how you get ideas of what posters are like in real life and then they're completely wrong. I always thought Wullie was an auld gadgie until I saw him post his pic.

Then you realised that Wullie was/is an auld gadgie.

I was at the QPR game (West Stand Paddock) with my dad, as a 9 year old. I remember the gates being locked by 130pm - magical day. :coolsmiley:

qued outside Gallowgate all morning, looked like we wernt getting in, someone shouted thers a gate open at the benches, loads of usran up the alley, ended up getting in the leazes corner. Watched the rest of KKs time here in the west stand Paddocks.

I'm not even sure how my dad managed to get us in that day. Could it be that he knew John Trewick's (who played for Newcastle at the time) dad very well? Hmmmmm.......

Was in the Bigg Market with my mate having a few beers when we saw the Chronicle hoardings, "Keegan jets in to sign." Needless to say we dismantled one of them and carried the paper part round all the pubs to show everyone, whether they cared or not.

Guest Haris Vuckic

Could possibly argue his transfer to Southampton from Hamburg was similarly 'sensational' tbh.

Nah they were a first division team.

Got told of the transfer on hols in Italy - didn't believe it. Queued outside the west stand drinking beer for the qpr game in the sunshine. Fantastic day I can't think of transfer like it. Charlton signed a previous European footballer of the year around the same time but signing KK was like say Sheff Utd signing someone like Beckham at a time when Beckham was still the man. KK was still far and away the biggest name in English football when we signed him. It should be remembered that at the time Southampton had a fantastic side with the likes of Channon Ball Armstrong Shilton and Watson yet KK walked away to come here to a club that was going nowhere with a ground that was falling apart

I wish i was old enough to remember those days and the mid 90's :(

Least i had a ST for the Bobby days. But christ you just couldn't imagine that happening now like. Considering he was England captain as well wasn't he?

From the article:

"There was a look of disbelief on everybody’s face. Keegan was still the captain of England, he had played at Hamburg and been European Player of the Year. We just couldn’t take it in."

I remember reading in KK's autobiography from about 1998, that when SBR came to watch a Newcastle game after dropping KK in 1982 Newcastle fans spat at him :/  :-[
