Newcastle United 0 - 2 Blackpool - 11/9/10 - post match reaction from page 20

Incidentally Blackpool have bagged two away wins already. I wonder how long it will be till we are able to say that? 2011 I'm guessing.

They're playing the way a lot of promoted teams do when they first come up - without fear. Hull did it brilliantly when they came up and more or less had the points that kept them up by the end of November. These teams just go out and enjoy themselves, carrying their momentum from the play-offs with them and, importantly, initially play the same way they do at home when they go away.

We will of course go away from home and play like frightened kittens. I hate the whole attitude to home and away games, it's become accepted now that teams can cower in their shells away from home. Yes, there is a difference but it's mainly psychological therefore deliberately going out with a different attitude is shooting yourself in the foot before you've even started, you should actually be trying to approach the game in the same way mentally.

At the end of the day, it's still 22 blokes kicking a ball round a field, the way folk go on you'd think they play different rules depending on whether you're in Newcastle or Wigan.

Great post.

I agree with most of that, however playing on the counter attack away from home can be very useful as the emphasis is usually on the home team to attack. The atmosphere can obviously have a big effect on the players aswell, that is of course unless you're a Wigan Athletic player as then it becomes a disadvantage.

You'd think so but you wouldn't know it by the number of times we've gone to the JJB/DW/whatever the fuck that tit calls it now, played like we're playing Barcelona and ended up coming away with fuck all.

I only wish we'd played Blackpool at home later in the season when they're in the middle of a four month spell without a win. Playing teams like this so soon in the season can sometimes be a real banana skin. Even Burnley turned over Man Utd last year.

I know we're not a big gun anymore but it was a shock result and one that NUFC have specialised in over the years.

Blackpool effectively ruined our 'game plan' if you can call it that and i think they dominated the midfield and the wings whoever their left winger was made Perch look a disgarce tbh. Jonas and Routledge were a no show yesterday. We set up a agme at home as if we were playing away to Man Utd and look what happened.

Regardless of those 3 chances we had we still didn't deserve to win.

Missed this weekend's football having been away and saw this. Having been gutted initially and feared the worst, it was somewhat edifying to hear that we didn't play too badly and that equally Blackpool put in a remarkable away performance which caused Holloway to say it was the best night of his managerial life!

Still very disappointed that we didn't put our chances away, but next week's fixture will be tough against an Everton aside who seemingly haven't got just rewards for their performances of late. Here's hoping for better fortune/clinical play next week.

Also, was anyone's performance so bad that Hughton would consider starting someone else? Perch? Smith?

[/still haven't seen the game]

in almost every sport that is played home and away the vast majority of teams have better home records than away and numerous studies have been done into it.

If he doesn't drop Smith next game he'll lose a lot of respect from me:/

he'll gain some respect from me, not everyone has the strength to fly in the face of sense, reason and the bleeding obvious and to say to 50,000 people "up yours i make the decisions"

Our safety relies on beating the teams that will more than likely finish 15th and below. Losing to Blackpool absolutely stinks of Hull 2 seasons ago.

We then went on to draw with Wigan and Stoke. Guess who our next two home games are....

Only just got to see MOTD now.

How could Smith argue that wasn't a penalty?

I thought Smith was a bit unlucky. It looked like he got the ball before making contact with the man, but it would have been a difficult spot for the ref.

Be disappointed if we don't get 4 points at least out of those. Especially as we're liable to get panned in our next two away fixtures.

Yep, it could easily be one of the results that come May we look back on and think "if only".

I know but the difference is clearly psychological. The job of the manager should be to try and negate the psychological impact and imo deliberately intending to go into the match with a different attitude is doing the opposite.

easier said than done as the other (home) team is behaving like the home team in turn. even the likes of man utd and chelsea tend to have less possession in away games than home games due to the way the home team plays.

Anything less than four points would be a disaster. 4 is just about acceptable.

Unfortunately Stoke are a team of cunts who would quite gladly board up the goalmouth, draw every game nil nil and survive by 3 points every year, then the one year 38 points isn't enough, claim 'rough justice' and 'we knew the 39th game was a good idea'.

Probably a good idea to play more than one up front then.

Do we have more than one to play up front?

We do, in what way though?
