SWANSEA CITY manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed defender Neil Taylor is on the verge of signing a new four year deal at the club.

Taylor has been at the centre of a dispute between the Swans and Newcastle after the Magpies tabled a £1 million bid for the young Wales international last month.

It had appeared Taylor was prepared to go-head-to-head with the club in front of a Premier League arbitration panel in a bid to force through a move to the Swans' top-flight rivals.

Newcastle believed they had activated an escape clause in the defender’s contract when they tabled a £1.1m bid last month.

But Swansea have so far blocked the move, maintaining the small print in the deal only allows Taylor to discuss a potential deal rather than complete an actual transfer.

That stance prompted things to take an incredible twist when the highly-rated full-back formally contacted the Premier League to ask they look into the dispute.

But Rodgers this afternoon revealed Taylor is now set to sign a new four year deal at the club and wreck Newcastle's hopes of signing the 22-year-old.

"We are very, very close to a new deal," Rodgers said.

"A lot of stuff has been written and I feel sorry for Neil. This is the first chance I've had to speak about it

"I understand a young player having his head turned by a club the size of Newcastle but I've had good face-to-face conversations with him in the last week and he knows that this club is a fantastic place for a player to come and develop."

Gets weirder all the time this.

So he's gone from asking the Premier League to basically help him leave Swansea to being close to signing a new contract? Does anyone actually have the first clue what's really happening?

It's not that hard to fathom. Swansea have probably pointed out that he wouldn't get in our first team and have probably matched our modest wage package and given him a new deal, so he's changed his mind. When you are relying on clauses and loopholes to complete a signing there's always a fair chance it will fall through.

Agree with this.

New contract will have a release clause of £2m in it, you watch

A release clause you say? That should get our transfer team "releasing" some semen fairly sharpish.

Makes sense for him. If he does well this season and Enrique hasn't gone there a fair chance we'll be in again next year.

If he does well this season the price will go up by plenty - which means we most definitely won't be in for him.
