Most comfortable playing as a lone striker, Ba's predatory instincts in and around the penalty area make him a difficult player to handle and he also possesses the ability to score spectacular goals.

Seems they know what they're getting, and he must know the implications too.

Who was the Newcastle player we sold to a comparably-sized/bigger club whose exit wasn't greeted with hostility?

Doesn't seem to me as there as anyway to leave without some fans being bitter, unless they can exercise a degree of condescension about where you're going

Woodgate?

Why shouldn't every outgoing transfer be met with some hostility?

They're choosing to leave us - fuck 'em. I'm not going to give him £20 for the petrol money and wish him a successful career - especially if he's going to playing in the same league

Milner went without hostility. Absolutely no reason for there to have been any, either.

That's because a lot of people didn't rate him and thought we'd mugged Villa on the fee.

 Agree.

Woodgate is a good shout from Tooj though. Although, maybe him going abroad had some bearing on that. If he'd gone to Man Utd, I'm sure his disastrous debut away from here would have been greeted with rapturous cheers.

Injuries will have played a part with Woodgate too, if he was an everpresent for us I'm sure it would have been more difficult to stomach.

I don't know. Maybe you're right, maybe it's symptomatic of the way modern football is...

...it just seems strange to me that fans can idolise and respect a player who gives his all one minute, but then turn on that same person for wanting to be paid more than Chelsea's youth team player/not be in a relegation scrap for the remainder of his finite career, as one of the league's deadliest predators.

It seems the same as having hostility to one of your childhood mates back in school going to a better university or getting a better job than you, even though they clearly deserve it.

I agree!

If your girlfriend leaves you for one of your mates your not going to help her pack and drive her over there are ya!

The difference is, that childhood mate was a mate.

Demba Ba gave his all, yes, but he was just doing a job. He never really 'committed' to the love of the club IMO, and just like previous clubs now he's gone. Don't get any emotional attachment to players anymore, a testament of modern football it seems.

I'm not rewriting history - he did us very very well. But he doesn't want to be here, and I want to focus on players that want to be here. So bye bye basically

Is it not a bit symptomatic of modern blame culture and fans are unlikely to blame their own? It's all a bit pathetic if you ask me; move on, forget about it. On the flipside so is the 'ooo look at me not celebrating' culture doing the rounds.

Even Distin was getting the odd boo on Weds, 10 years later...

So you have hostility to all non-mates around the world who went to a better university or has a better job than you?! ;)

Nah, fair enough.  I do agree about not getting hung up. It's just one of my footballing pet peeves that increasingly no one seems to get on anymore in football, really. Clubs, former players etc.

Milner had also been massively fucked about by Shepherd and just got on with it for us. He had a lot of limitations, but his integrity was never one of them.

If he was going home (ala Fabricio) or to another country, then I wouldn't be as hostile. But he's chasing the money and success in the same league as us, so he's a rival now.

Especially when you consider how many of us were underwhelmed by his signing.

:dowie:

There were loads of players being linked for fairly big money, a fair amount of 'good backup, we still need a couple more' talk. Not many were looking at him as the player he became for us tbf.

I was one of them as I was concerned about his fitness, and to be fair he proved me wrong. I don't dislike him at all, though I've thought for a long time now that selling him might not be a disaster.
