As captain though under Pardew, he is terrible and goes against ever notion of what a good captain should do/be. Taylor, Williamson and Coloccini = most of the defense that got us relegated the first time - they are still our defense 5 years later! Unbelievable really. He was poor for the goal but made some good interceptions and blocks when facing Stoke counters and showed he still has some positional strength. Crouch had him very wary the whole game. It was also good to see him try to organise that backline for the goal even though he ended up committing the fault he tried to warn them about.
