Minhosa
What our back 5 needs is Given 2002, Beye 2008, Enrique 2011, Coloccini 2011 & Woodgate 2003. Yeah agree with that. Enrique over OB every time for me.
Guest
I think Bernard was better over a longer period of time but Enrique in the first season back was a beast.

I've always felt Enrique was better over a longer period due to his consistency. Bernard was outstanding that one season.
Tooj
Injury issues were only part of the problem. He couldn't have cared less about his career. For all people slag off John Terry, he took his weaknesses and worked so hard on his game that they no longer really mattered. Woodgate on the other hand just (usually) turned up on time, did the bare minimum he was contracted for and spent the rest of his life acting like a cunt. Still doesn't mean he wasn't great when he was on the pitch though.
Ronaldo
He often played great, yeah. In terms of decline there are bigger reasons than being unlucky with injuries.

Enrique over OB every time for me. At his best, Bernard was brilliant going forward and very strong defensively. Jose's never looked brilliant going forward in the PL. Dr Venkman
Depends on how you define talent. I'd say intelligence is the most important talent a defender can have. Now this is the truth.

Guest
Beye 2008 was better than Hughes at any point between say 01-05 imo.

And on the pitch Woodgate was an Intelligent defender. Read the game very well. Certainly as well if not better than peak Colo.

Unfortunately injuries which may have been exacerbated by a poor off the pitch attitude stopped him from being truly World class.
Ronaldo
If John Terry was remotely likeable as a person no sane person would hold that view. No defender in the history of the PL reads situations, attacks, ball flight etc as well as Terry.
The College Dropout
Terry's been a brilliant defender but he's been helped out by being in teams with great overall defensive qualities built to maximise his strengths. But it's difficult to seriously mention Woodgate in the same breathe as Terry. Over a decade of consistent top level performances vs. a peak of about 50 games
Disco
Sol Campbell or Jaap Stam are the only ones I can think of that should be mentioned in the same breath as Terry as far as PL centre backs go.
Incognito
I agree with that but would say without injuries Woodgate would certainly be in that echelon alongside Tony Adams too.

Rio Ferdinand & Vidic. Maybe it's because he's an idiot but Ferdinand is slightly under-rated. At the highest level in the Champions League he was consistently better than Vidic & Terry. He was also better for England than Terry.
Yorkie
Sol Campbell or Jaap Stam are the only ones I can think of that should be mentioned in the same breath as Terry as far as PL centre backs go. Adams as well I'd say.
The College Dropout
During that period Man Utd. went to 3 CL finals in 4 seasons, that Man United back 4 (VDS, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra) where the best defensive unit in Europe.
