Gabriel Obertan signs for Anzhi

McClaren will soon learn that one swallow doesn't make a summer. Obertan had his customary one off good game, he'll soon revert to type and be out of the team. He's just not got the character to really go for it, even on Sunday he got progressively worse after a flying start.

I disagree with his decision but I respect the mentality behind it. About time we used the fret of our wide players (at least in terms of Obertan's pace) to try and peg opposition fullbacks back, as opposed to using them as secondary fullbacks.

Still think Aarons would've been better suited to that like.

This. would rather he do this any day of the week than have Gouffran out there

Say what you want about Obertan but...

that cross was unreal.

I'm hoping that one moment of insanity doesn't earn him a new deal here.

I'm hoping it doesn't stop them peddling him in this transfer window ffs

Looks like it has, Craig Hope says they want rid of Gouffran now

ah well, if it's a choice between binning one of them i'd live with obertan staying until his contract runs down tbh, that cross on sunday is probably more than gouffran will contribute the rest of the season if he starts every week

I would definitely rather than keep Obertan at the moment, even though Gouff was a much better player at one point.

He's never going to be that player again, doesn't even look remotely interested in trying to get back in form. Just wants to pick up his wage

I'm hoping Steve Mc doesn't embark on a personal crusade to be known as the bloke who may unlock whatever potential this brainless chicken of a footballer supposedly showed yonks ago. My fear is the manager may have fallen in love with his pre-Man Utd credentials/resume ie Clairfontaine graduate, the youth international caps. Didn't somebody like Blanc once comment (on Obertan, what he showed at French Yth Lvl) that he lacked mental toughness & self belief. These frailties are on display at his constant reluctance to go after the fullback's jugular, and not use his speed. Aarons on the otherhand is ruthless, a tormenter - the wing is arguably the most isolated one-on-one positional battle on the pitch, and not one for gutless types who may train well (a training drill king, somebosy who effortlessly beats cones) but ultimately freeze up on match-day.

If we're going to offload Obertan the best way is to play him during the transfer window, when his fitness is good and he may fluke a few good things. We may get a buyer. If that's McClaren's idea I'm all for it. I'm sure Sir Bob put a few players in the shop window by making others think they were in his first team plans.

I reckon he rates him. You can see what McClaren has done with players he doesn't rate. Fair play to him for that, but Obertan should be treated just like Williamson and Gouffran.

Don't believe he rates him personally, we'll see, but IMO he won't keep starting him once more players are fully fit.
