madras
imo that money still wouldn't have been spent had we been higher up the table. Ridiculous really. fairly sure they said deals were already agreed for gouffran and sissoko for the summer (on frees) and were brought forward due to the situation. debuchy was a hangover from last summer, not sure where mapou came into it. Tiresias
Part of me thinks the tv money should be spread way more unevenly towards the top 6 just to give cunts like Ashley some motivation to have some ambition, though I also think that would lead to clubs pulling away too much from the rest (albeit happened anyway really with 'top 4')

I think Ashley saw the Reading game and it forced his hand. If he can get away without spending money he will, if we'd been cruising he may not have felt the need to spend. Unbelievable
I think Colo threatening to leave in January forced them into buying Yanga-Mbiwa more than anything else.

Perhaps, but if say during January we'd been something like 7th or 8th and comfortable, it's quite possible MYB wouldn't be at the club and we'd be going through the same tedious stuff now with trying to get him here. It's maybe a cynical view but not unlikely.

Stuy_O
Fairly obvious thing to say but whilst Ashley's affection for this club is as low at is the spending will be minimal from now till the day he finally fucks off. This is probably the start of it.
mrmojorisin75
It's one of the worst transfer windows in my time following the club yet nobody seems arsed. This has become the norm and we all lap it up as usual. my own apathy about transfers is dictated by how awful i believe our manager is; i said the other day that throwing players won't help pardew as i truly believe he's beyond hope...i'm clouded by my knowledge of how poor this man is so the fact we're not throwing away money on bent and downing to satisfy his prehistoric view of football just doesn't register with me anymore, i'll come alive again once this knacker is down the road but then of course we'll have to contend with and a whole heap of other problems
High Five o
Poor Dave, reached the breaking point... Ffs do you think transfers will fix it? Pardew is our manager
KaKa
Funny that people are so wound up about this now. You just wait till Cabaye is sold at the last minute. Then you can really lose it!
oldtype
I honestly don't care who plays for us as long as the current regime remains in place. No point getting attached to this group of players when the current incarnation of the team clearly isn't going anywhere
Dr Venkman
If they repeat the same mistake as last summer I won't be able to chalk it up to anything other than sheer incompetence. It's worse than that and has been evident for some time. He doesn't care where we finish as long as it's above 18th.

Zero
it's simple, you either sack the manager, or give him money to buy the player he needs. what we are doing now is purely time-wasting. i'd rather give money to Pardew to buy players like Bent or Downing (who is at least a winger) rather than sticking with Obertan as our only winger FFS. Dr.Spaceman
I would have been happy with zero transfers and a significant upgrade in manager tbf I would be happy with losing 1 or 2 purples and a significant manager upgrade!

thenige
The thing is, what else exactly can we do other than 'lap it up?' What other choices do we have? Stop supporting or caring about the club? Protest? Stop spending any money on anything related to Newcastle? How many people do you know who have actually turned their back on the club and don't look out for the results anymore? Or have gone to support say Gateshead or somebody else? It's incredibly frustrating being a Newcastle supporter when we all feel we're so close to having a decent side on paper, only for the realities of board and manager to quash those ambitions. I still think it was worse under Souness. If we have a shocking start to the season I may be convinced otherwise but even being in a position where I live hundreds of miles from the ground and can get free tickets to a couple of other league clubs, I can't see myself walking away. Wow. I feel like an alcoholic.

There's definitely negligence there, but I don't think that's all it is. For whatever success Ashley has had in the retail sporting goods business, I don't think he has the capacity to run the club successfully (measured as top level football on the pitch and financial stability). That incompetence manifests itself in neglect. Anywho, I'd be pleased to see us actually learn from mistakes and adjust behavior accordingly. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, etc.
Willow
I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the club, to listen on some of the reasoning on transfers for example. If we don't get another 2 players I fear another low placed finish... Haven't we let about 9 players go and only got 1 loan signing in? it's the Anita window all over again. Signing another striker would solve so many problems for us, as we really struggle for goals. A winger would be a luxury at this stage but we desperately need one too. Not holding my breath
