I don't think a manager who is purely a disciplinarian will ever really succeed with modern PL players. Not sure Di Canio is that or if he's more subtle about it in private.

As my mate said (Stockport fan) when he was hired;

"forget whether he is fascist or too strict...he is a league 1 manager with little to no tactical acumen, probably more worrying for them"

Amazing comments comparing us to Spurs and mackems to Arsenal later in that thread...

Noticed this for a while, even when they come to the SOL.

They are like two different breeds of people and yet they live in the same area, Arsenal fans aways look well off, decent people, I never see anyone on tv who looks like a thug.

The Spurs fans all look like leary geezers, all up for it and not very pretty..

It's as if the middle class in that area support one team and the working class the other, is it just me.

Tottenham is a bit of a dive tbf, compared to the neighbouring areas.

Highbury is much nicer for sure. Not sure when having more middle class fans was something to be proud of mind you... in fact just the opposite is usually the case.

Very interesting the Di Canio interview. He's right in most of what he says but that won't stop him being despised in the dressing room. It'll be a struggle for him to get the best from dissenting players.

He's mad though. He could be the next North Korean leader. He really is crazy.

His way of expressing his opinions seems far too blunt to me, and he does it in public as well. Unless he actually wants players out and also is definitely able to get them out immediately, he is far too strong in his statements. It will be interesting but all I can see is unrest in the camp, unless he manages to bring in perfect professionals throughout.

the problem is no 1 he's drastically lowering the value of an already low value squad by so publicly bad mouthing them and possibly making them a lot more difficult to shift. No2 players looking in at it are they going to be enthusiastic about joining sunderland to work under from the outside appearances a psycho.

And above all else is he making these very public slap downs of his players for the good of the club or for the ego of Paulo Di Canio because frankly it looks more like the 2nd.

This unionism will go down well with the fascist  :iamatwat:

In truth actually I have some sympathy with DiCanio on this actually, squad is full of right t***s and does need a proper clearout. Being a manager does take a degree of diplomacy too though...

Right that the value is pretty poor though, but if he's confident of new signings he may see if any of them are willing to make a step up.

Defender Phil Bardsley is one of those appealing against being hit in the pocket, believing he did NOT break club rules on a team night out last Tuesday, during which he was photographed lying on the floor of a casino covered in £50 notes.

The defender said the money was winnings that he planned to give to charity.

Sunderland and Di Canio aren't big enough to be able to get away with shit like this. Any player with any pedigree they go in for this summer would tell their agent to make sure they got more than the going rate anyway since they're naturally quite reticent to moving to the NE. When you consider they've got a right wing nutter who will cancel their holidays and fine them huge sums for any perceived indiscretion then they're going to have to chuck obscene sums at players to convince them to consider SAFC.
