If we finish 7th, and Liverpool finish 6th instead while also contesting the FA Cup final with Spurs/Chelsea, we'll still get the Waffa Cup place, aye?

Yep, there's nobody else to contest that 7th european spot. As long as it's a Liverpool vs Spurs/Chelsea final (hi Neil), top 7 will be fine.

Chelseas schedule is potentially ridiculous if they get through against Benfica, which looks likely after last night. Hopefully they'll be knackered and it'll affect their league form giving us a chance to take advantage.

Can also see the league becoming the least of their worries if it looks like Champions League qualification is unachievable after the next few games, not sure they'll be massively bothered whether or not they qualify for the Europa.

Unfortunately, I don't think Spurs aren going to improve enough to get out of sight of Chelsea, so Chelsea will have Spurs in their sights for the rest of the season. Unless Arsenal dip in form, which I don't see happening, Chelsea will have a Spurs team to catch who have already played the best they are going to this season.

Europe - further qualification

Update: The picture became a little clearer after the results of Tuesday night's FA Cup quarter finals.

With Spurs and Chelsea now certain to provide one of the FA Cup finalists and both likely to qualify for Europe by finishing in at least the top five, the FA Cup Europa League place is now only realistically available to Everton.

If the Toffees fail to make the final then we are almost certain to qualify for Europe, unless one of the teams below Liverpool (at least ten points behind us) can finish above us.

Earlier: Some useful guidance regarding our chances of making a return to European competition next season appeared in the Chronicle - here's an abridged version:

UEFA has allocated three Europa League places to England next season: One via the PL, one to Carling Cup winners Liverpool and one to the FA Cup winners.

UEFA will only admit four teams from each country into the Champions League after amending their rules in 2006.

A fourth place finish would earn a two-legged playoff place for a spot in the Champions League group stages (21st Aug/28th Aug). If Chelsea won the Champions League and finished in fifth or lower, the fourth-placed team would go into the Europa League.

A fifth place finish would earn a two-legged playoff place for the Europa League (23rd Aug/30th Aug).

A sixth place finish could also earn a two-legged playoff place for the Europa League (23rd/30th Aug) if the FA Cup Final was contested by two teams who had both already qualified for Europe via a different route ie PL, Carling Cup, Champions League.

However a sixth place finish could see us beaten to a Europa League spot by the losing FA Cup finalist, regardless of where that team finishes in the PL.

A seventh place finish could also earn a place in the two legged Third Qualifying Round of the Europa League (2nd Aug/9th Aug), due to Liverpool's Carling Cup Final win which already gives them a place in that tournament.

That would require Liverpool to finish sixth and the FA Cup Final was contested by two teams who had both already qualified for Europe via a different route ie PL, Champions League.

Fuck it, let's be positive. Hope for Everton to get to the final, so we get an easy 3 points on the last day to help us grab 4th.
