In a way I find the demise (bad word to use since its been a more gradual fall to lesser status than a sudden "oh crap we're not that good anymore" moment) of the Dutch League to this extent that we're apparently better option than Ajax, just doesn't feel right

It's a sad state of affairs, and in a way the richness of the Premiership and other bigger leagues with more marketing potential (TV revenues) is a direct cause of the demise of the Dutch league and other, similar smaller leagues. The youth academies of the big Dutch clubs are literally raided by the likes of Man City and Chelsea every year, who have their youth and reserve teams brimming with talent that for the most part will never get a chance in the Premiership because these clubs will just rather spend another 20 million than bring on a youth prospect. In the past these players would have developed in the Dutch league and moved when they were in their early to mid twenties, now they get picked up when they're 15 or 16. It would be better for all parties concerned if the big teams in the Premiership involved in a feeder club relationship with these clubs/academies and worked together to bring the talent on to the point where they were proven in the Dutch league (or at a similar level in other countries) before moving on to the next level.

Edit: as an example, I recently read the baffling fact that a team like Swansea earns more TV money than the whole of the Dutch league combined. When you consider that TV revenues is probably more than 70% of the income of most clubs, it illustrates the magnitude of the problem for the lesser leagues and it becomes self perpetuating because due to the lower level in comparison to the bigger leagues there is even more incentive for young players to move to bigger leagues (too) early.

not just the dutch league, wasn't so long ago that if anderlecht were drawn against an english club bar our champions they would probably have been favourites.

Eastern Europe too.

Only the dodgy rubles and grivna floating around is holding up football over that way.

Sky Sports understands Sunderland are ready to fight Premier League rivals Newcastle for Ajax ace Vurnon Anita.

Newcastle have had a bid rejected by Ajax for Anita with the Dutch giants thought to be holding out for a fee in the region of £10-£12million for the Holland international.

The Magpies are thought to be preparing a new offer for Anita, but now Sunderland have expressed an interest in the defensive midfielder.

Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill is keen to bolster his midfield options this summer and has earmarked Anita as one of his top transfer targets.

O'Neill has money to spend this summer and he is hoping to steal a march on North East rivals Newcastle by winning the race for Anita.

A number of other Premier League clubs are thought to be tracking Anita with Aston Villa chief Paul Lambert a long-term admirer of the 23-year-old since his time in charge at Norwich.

Ajax are reluctant to lose Anita, but know they would not be able to resist a sizeable offer for the all-action midfielder.

Are sunderland able to offer bigger wages? Would be annoying if they got him but if he turns down europe for extra wage etc good riddance.

Better training facilities, better fans and Marty's Parties. It's a no brainer for him unfortunately.
