Floated set penis to Williamson/Taylor at back post

Recommended Posts

When we got that free kick in the last minute I was just waiting for it.  I knew it would happen, I knew it wouldn't work but somehow I still looked forward to it just for the comedy value.  What happened to this set piece specialist anyway?

Kill this routine with fire. I'd probably rather we just had a shot from wherever we're taking the free kicks from. It's possibly the worst repeated routine I've ever seen

We'd be best off just shooting from 50 yards. Ridiculous tactic at the best of times, let alone when it relies on such an inept player going forward.

We probably practice it all week with Marveaux defending it.

It's just embarrassing that we try this tactic every bloody time. I have no problem with using it occasionally, but surely the element of surprise is key to set pieces. Shows a real lack of imagination by our coaches and/or players. All I can assume is that there must be something in the stats that shows this to be a viable option, because I certainly can't see it.

Whilst the tactic is undoubtably a waste of time, it doesn't help that we have so few players capable of taking a competent set piece. On Saturday, with virtually the last second we had bloody Tiote lofting a free kick in, from a dangerous looking position. Cheik has his positives, but fucking hell, was there nobody more suitable? Cabaye's set pieces are usually dreadful, although a threat from direct free kicks and Bigi's don't look much cop either.

Catching up on this thread and reminding myself what a disgusting 'tactic' this is. Anyone else amused at the fact that even though teams know what we're going to do, they don't stick any further defending on Williamson, probably because they know he won't pull it off anyway?

I think it's a case of playing it safe. Floating a cross with back spin to the back post is a lot easier than whipping one in. I don't think it would happen as much, had all of our corners against Villa not been so bad.

Like I said earlier in the thread I think it's actually a defensive tactic, less chance of getting caught on the break if we lose a header at the back stick.

Vindicated today? :(

That one to Colo on the edge of the box in the first half was really good. God knows why we chose Colo but it definitely was effective.

Dont you remember Colo's two edge of area headed efforts from corners.
