wormy
You should see the Southampton goal today. Corner comes in to the back post, absolutely no marking at all and Ramirez scores. Williamson would be in dreamland. Except he wouldn't have connected.

Dr Venkman
Not that it would ever happen, but this is the one thing that's come closest to making me stop watching football altogether. It makes me genuinely sad.
Pilko
Our policy on this must be that if you throw enough shit, then some must stick. Except so far it hasn't, at all.
durhamunigeordie
Hasn't worked for the best part of two years, can't see it changing.
Guest Geordiesned
This might stand a chance if the target didn't have a 50 pence piece as a head!
loki679
When we got that free kick in the last minute I was just waiting for it. I knew it would happen, I knew it wouldn't work but somehow I still looked forward to it just for the comedy value. What happened to this set piece specialist anyway? TRC
I want this thread to keep going until it works. Luckily with Saylors injury, we get to see it more often.
Guest NobbyOhNobby
Kill this routine with fire. I'd probably rather we just had a shot from wherever we're taking the free kicks from. It's possibly the worst repeated routine I've ever seen
Ronaldo
We'd be best off just shooting from 50 yards. Ridiculous tactic at the best of times, let alone when it relies on such an inept player going forward.
Mick
We'd be best off just shooting from 50 yards. Ridiculous tactic at the best of times, let alone when it relies on such an inept player going forward. We probably practice it all week with Marveaux defending it. Beren
Got to the point where I expected to see Williamson on the end of Harper's goal kicks. Actually ridiculous/unacceptable to persist for so long with this.
RodneyCisse
Anyone see how we nearly scored from Ben Arfas free kick then williamson came thundering in for the second ball heading it to cisse offside or some shit?
mouldy_uk
It's just embarrassing that we try this tactic every bloody time. I have no problem with using it occasionally, but surely the element of surprise is key to set pieces. Shows a real lack of imagination by our coaches and/or players. All I can assume is that there must be something in the stats that shows this to be a viable option, because I certainly can't see it.
toondra
the coach ask this, 99 percent of the teams play a simple pass fast, our set pieces look like from amateurs ones in cup game unprofessional.
Hughesy
Almost the most frustrating thing about it (over than the fact that it never works and is overused) is that the ball should probably be going to Taylor as he is better in the air than Williamson. Guest BooBoo
Whilst the tactic is undoubtably a waste of time, it doesn't help that we have so few players capable of taking a competent set piece. On Saturday, with virtually the last second we had bloody Tiote lofting a free kick in, from a dangerous looking position. Cheik has his positives, but fucking hell, was there nobody more suitable? Cabaye's set pieces are usually dreadful, although a threat from direct free kicks and Bigi's don't look much cop either.
wormy
Catching up on this thread and reminding myself what a disgusting 'tactic' this is. Anyone else amused at the fact that even though teams know what we're going to do, they don't stick any further defending on Williamson, probably because they know he won't pull it off anyway? Dave
I think it's a case of playing it safe. Floating a cross with back spin to the back post is a lot easier than whipping one in. I don't think it would happen as much, had all of our corners against Villa not been so bad. Like I said earlier in the thread I think it's actually a defensive tactic, less chance of getting caught on the break if we lose a header at the back stick. Vindicated today? Jack Flash
That one to Colo on the edge of the box in the first half was really good. God knows why we chose Colo but it definitely was effective.
Skeletor
We took two decent corners early on (both aimed at Colo incidentally) then went back to this shit. So disappointing.
