Darth Crooks
I don't think we played quite as well as some people may think judging by the scoreline, it was more a case of the second goal completely stunning them into submission, after that they were under our control even if we weren't in possession. Pard's quotes about more energy, verve and ambition was deffo palpable in the way we were passing the ball around. Great to see the defence pass it out, think Ferguson, Tiote and Cabaye made this easier to do and were instrumental in bringing the ball out. Funny that Shola is so good in Europe, I sometimes think to myself "what the Funk has he got that keeps him here", then I see him play in Europe or against the Mackems and hope is restored for another few months...Good on ya Shola!! My points for last Night (although viewed on stream): Elliot (7): Excellent game and was impressed by his footwork, some good passes from goal. Typical that he gets injured. Harper (6): A steady performance from Harps, looks like he has regained some of that form he had a couple of years ago. Still do not like how long he takes to kick it out and he is very averse to the long punt... Ferguson (8): I really think this lad makes a huge difference to us, his energy, trickiness and good technique when bringing the ball out make him a great asset. He has looked great the last couple of games. If we revert to 442 he NEEDS TO BE OUR LEFT WINGER. If we play 433 I would have him there instead of Santon for his overlapping ability. Perch (6): Much better game from Perch, passes ball out well but wasn't really pressurized much. Willo (8): I have given him an eight because he gets on with it and gives his all every game. He didn't put a foot wrong last night and even passed the ball out of defence well. Please copy and paste if playing on Sunday! Simpson (7): Without having seen Santon at right back, Simpson is without a doubt our best player for this position. He played well last night and seems to calm our central defenders, he looked in great shape considering he's been out a few weeks. Obertan (8): He did play well last night but he still isn't taking on the oppositon enough for my liking, quite a few times I was shouting at him to take him on as he has the pace and tricks just doesn't seem to quite have the confidence. With another 5% added on to last night, he would be a superb player! P.S. Defended and covered very well last night and great counter attacking outlet. Tiote (7): Passing was great, running and tackling also, would like to see him push on now and again as he seems to be repelled by some bi-polar "attack magnet" stuck in the opposition's area. Cabaye (7): Whether it was because it was a french team and he wanted to impress or he is returning to form, it seriously annoys me that we have seen such sub-standard performances from him when he is capable of much better. Repeat on Sunday! Anita (5): Didn't do a great deal last night but I suppose he was out of position. He hasn't impressed me so much, he is at the moment on a par with Marveaux in that you can see he has something but has yet to impose himself on a game. Shola (8): Can't fualt the bloke! Excellent performance up top and when he stepped back into midfield (when he was kanckered). Ran his legs off and bossed their defenders quite a bit. Cisse (7): Returning back to form, confidence thing for me. He tried a couple of really audacious attempts last night, speaks volumes! Roll on the Mancs, just hope him and Ba can gel on Sunday... Bigi (8): Did really well, looks a fantastic prospect, we didn't miss Tiote at all even though the game was being played at a different pace. Gosling (7): I thought he got into the right positions and played some neat football last night. We have to give this lad a chance, it may be he is another Guthrie waiting to happen... Patience please! My Eyes 10 Hours - Spongebob Squarepants ...sounds a fair reflection though. Good to hear about Obertan...He really does have lots of attributes to be potentially genuine threat

WarrenBartonCentrePartin
totally forgot last night as well, had Oscar the grouch and his mate sat behind me. When Harper saved from Bellion (where we woefully tried to play offside) the Strawberry corner had a rendition of "theres only one Stevie Harper". Oscar and his mate got arsey shouting "ya thick twats man! He's on the bench! Jesus Christ!". Couldn't bite my tongue so turned round and explained that Elliott went off at half time. Firmly left egg and their face in perfect alignment.
Mistle17
Last night was my first ever game under the lights at St. James' and first European game. I really enjoyed it, a good performance topped by an impressive atmosphere (hats off to The Corner). I really hope we qualify for the knock out rounds as I feel we could see the return of some very exciting nights at St. James' Park
Beren
No quotes from the Bordeaux manager, Gillot? Edit: Found this Bordeaux coach Francis Gillot said: ‘We came up against a better side. We weren’t dominated but every time they had a chance it went in.’
aussiemag
No quotes from the Bordeaux manager, Gillot? Yeh I read that he said he felt they were the dominant side, the difference was we were far more clinical.... whatever Gillot

Tiresias
The differing opinions on anita in midfield i think stem from him a) takingtime to adapt still, hope he does, and b) hes more ofa tidy passer who keeps ball moving in a midfield 3 than any of our other players but isnt goingto do anything that'llneccessarily make motd highlight reels. Still think he has a nice cross into box from wide tho
Beren
Missed his pre-match comments too. “Newcastle essentially has two teams – one for the Premier League and the one they have used in the League Cup and Europa League.” “It is very difficult to know who they will name for this match. It is difficult for me to explain tactics to my players because of this.” “This is why we can only focus on ourselves. If they play the eleven who normally start Premier League matches, then it is going to be tough.” “The other 11 are not at the same level, if you like, because I have seen this. We expect to see the same team as played in Martimo. “ “We will play our strongest team. We are here to win the match.” “This is an exciting match. Newcastle is the best team in our group, they play at a fantastic home and have passionate fans.” “This will be a fantastic challenge for our players. It is a magical occasion because England is the home of football.” “I do know that Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye are two very good players. I hope they do not play.”

Still think he has a nice cross into box from wide tho As said before he seems a perfect fit for the role Jonas had in the 4-3-3 last season, there's nothing wrong with being a tidy midfielder that keeps things ticking over infact id argue if we are going to improve in possession players like him will be pivotal i thought he had a good game last night. Also a lot of people seem to have forgot he put in a fantastic through ball for Shola in the first half which led to a free kick that Cabaye hit the side netting with, if that was Ba or Cisse running onto it it probably would have been a goal. Sure he should have scored in the first half as well, but he's a midfielder that keeps things ticking over and has the vision to play through balls so it's not entirely surprising that his finishing is not the best. Guest WashyGeordie
The only negative for me was the empty seats, 31,000 is poor. I agree totally. How Cheap do the tickets have to get before we attract people to come and watch European Football at SJP? My main reason (and probably alot of others) is due to working shift patterns. For last night's game I had to take a holiday for it, I couldn't make the Atromitos game and luckily Brugges at home is when I'm back on early's. I was thinking maybe we could get more in if they did open Milburn level 7 as that's the family enclosure, I don't know why it isn't tbh, and where is the family section for European/cup games? That's fair enough i suppose but there's not 22000 people who go to the match who work shifts!!! There is no family Enclosure when Level 7 is closed. We're allowed to apply for tickets during the ST sale but obviously can't buy our own seats and can only buy seats that aren't reserved for existing season ticket holders unless we wait until the members sale period. I can understand why they don't open it as the crowds in previous years haven't justified it, but can also see that if they did open it a lot of people who sit there would buy tickets as they are put off buying by having to sit elsewhere than their normal seat. TherealnorthernTOON
Did he revert back to a 4-3-3 in 2nd half? Because midways through first he went to a 4-4-2 with shola playing in the 10 role.
ponsaelius
I watched the game again and a 5 for Anita is insanely harsh. Apart from 1 naff through ball and a miscontrol from a Cabaye pass he was actually very good yesterday.

Apart from 1 naff through ball and a miscontrol from a Cabaye pass he was actually very good yesterday. Been saying it as well he kept things ticking over with some great distribution, won possession on several occasions and put in a few great through balls one of which to Shola which if it was Ba or Cisse probably would have been a goal. Ok he should have scored his 1 v 1 but it's not surprising a passing midfielder is not accomplished in front of goal.

BeloEmre
Aye, the majority of people I know who didn't go last night couldn't make it because of work. Bullshit that. Would there be 31.000 if we had a PL game on Wednesday instead of a EL game on Thursday?? Personally, if people don't want to go, I think that's fine. It's up to the club/team to give people a reason to go to these games. However, you're completely right. The crowd is limited because it was a Europa League match, that's all. 20,000 people didn't happen to have a night shift, it's just not that interesting a game to go to, especially when you've got to buy a ticket in addition to your season ticket. Making up excuses is daft.
