Newcastle United could be set to sign a sixth player in the January transfer window after entering talks with Vitesse Arnhem for £12m-rated striker Wilfried Bony.

The 24-year-old is currently playing for the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations, so the north-east side face a race against time to complete the signing before the window closes on Thursday.

According to the Sunday Telegraph, the Dutch club are willing to let Bony leave if the terms are right despite him currently topping the Eredivisie scoring charts with 16 goals in 18 matches.

Bony would be yet another French-speaking player to join Alan Pardew's team this month, following the acquisition of right-back Mathieu Debuchy, striker Yoann Gouffran, midfielder Moussa Sissoko and defenders Massadio Haidara and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

The Ivorian's representatives claim Chelsea and Liverpool have also registered an interest, while West Ham were intending to make a move in the summer believing his transfer fee would go down.

But Newcastle have made a concrete offer and Bony looks set to be the latest buy in their bid to avoid relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

It could be the biggest move of the final week of the window, though Liverpool are expected to complete the £8m signing of Philippe Coutinho in the coming days.

@lee_ryder: From what I understand there has been no bid for Wilfried Bony of Vitesse Arnhem #nufc

Didn't he say that we had not bid for Aubayemang only a day or two before St. Etienne confirmed that they had rejected a bid from us?

St Etienne didn't say it was a new bid. If reports are to be believed we bid for him earlier

@lee_ryder: #nufc spoke to St Etienne at the start of month re Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. No fresh bid. Player wants to stay until end of season.

It's almost like he's reading this

I'd be pleased to see this one go through. I've lost a bit of faith in Cisse tbh.

Ah, he'll come again. Have faith.

Pardew on the other hand I didn't much much faith in to start with. Reading game blew away what there was

Would love the bruiser that Brony seems to be though.

Have a nagging feeling that there will be 1 or 2 club exits before window end too. And not the players the fans would want to leave either

Dunno, with just four days left on the window and without rumoured exits after the Coloccini saga, I can't see any big profile player leaving the club. Who are you thinking about?
