Yeah, who knows. My guess is Friedel's version is correct and Howard's publisher/ghost writer needed something veguely interesting to use a promo for the book so stretched the truth a bit.

What is Friedel's version?

After reading that it seems very believable and I would tend to believe Friedel's claims more

UEFA approves format for new Nations League starting in 2018 #SSNHQ"

Sound's fucking confusing:

Uefa have formally approved the new Nations League to replace most international friendlies.

The competition, featuring promotion and relegation, will first be played between September and November 2018.

The 52 countries will be split into four divisions, each featuring four groups of three or four teams.

Each team will play six games with the four group winners in the top division playing the semi-finals and final in June 2019 to determine the winner.

The best team in each of the four divisions who have not already qualified for Euro 2020 will play off in March 2020 for the final four places in the tournament, which is being played in 13 countries across Europe with the semi-finals and final at Wembley Stadium.

The Euro 2020 qualifiers will be played between March and November 2019 - after the initial Nations League competition.

In each division, four group winners are promoted (or play in the final four) and four teams are relegated for the next competition, which will be played in 2020.

There will be a winning team every odd year, while, for the 2022 World Cup, the same principles will apply but will be adapted to the number of qualification slots available and final tournament dates.

So friendlys against shit teams will take over but now with added meaning- if you haven't qualified properly for a tournament? So if you are looking like qualifying you are left with meaningless games ?? Really confused here. How will the top division be selected? Surely all the top sides will be qualified anyway leaving the division 2 fighting it out for qualification? Can't beleive this will be used for World Cup qualification also. This is shite

Football's turning American, Mike probably has his sock out over this.

American format = Very similar to the World Cup group/knockout format. One tournament, knockout. Winner takes all.

Nowt American about a shit secondary competition that gives the big nations a 2nd chance to qualify for another tournament.

not going to be happy until it's got cheerleaders, quarters instead of halves and  the abolition of draws in favor of a 15 minute no-offsides multi-ball extra time, first to score 5 goals wins.

So it's saying effectively the 'repechage'/second chance tournament will be played before the actual qualifiers?!?  :idiot2:

Don't really get the 'divisions' malarkey either, just seems a way to needlessly make football more complicated than it needs to be. Probably just a way to get more guaranteed fixtures between the 'top' nations in the top division to appeal to sponsors and TV companies.

Can see it getting worse than tedious after a while- the same teams playing each other if not in the 'top division group stage' then in the semi's/final every 2 years. Not of course factoring in the actual Euro's tournament itself- which is further devalued by this crap btw- and the prospect of top European teams coming up against each other at the world cup which often happens.

At least FIFA has a logic behind it's modus operandi- screw as much cash as possible out of everyone for their own personal gain- that everyone can understand. This lot (UEFA) just seem to pull random words on bits of paper out of a hat to come up with their initiatives. 'Week...of...football',  'League ...of...Nations.'

Just stop fucking with football man.  :tickedoff:
