It made Chinese clubs somewhat less attractive than they were two years before and, as attendances fell, clubs struggled to make up the financial deficit. They couldn't afford the wages promised to players and the financial backing from their mega-rich owners suddenly stopped.

 

The host of clubs backed by real estate conglomerates were affected by lower revenues during the Covid pandemic as the market collapsed and the billionaires who owned the clubs soon withdrew their funding. It meant that clubs such as Jiangsu Suning were forced to fold, having won the CSL title in the previous season.

Hulk, Jackson Martinez, Yannick Carrasco, Axel Witsel, Marek Hamsik and Gervinho soon made for the exit, with the dozens of Brazilian players heading back to South America, while Oscar is still in China after watching a move to Flamengo collapse at the 11th hour.

Now, star names in China are far and few between after the incredible spending from six years ago. And in the meantime, there has been little improvement for the China national team, with the CFA's gamble ultimately failing to bring the expected benefit.”

I think the major difference is nobody is going to bat an eyelid at the Saudi league at any point, other than the people being paid huge sums to go and take part in it.

 

The Chinese league at least had a billion Chinese potentially interested in it.

Not sure about Fowler bur Gerrards new gig is definitely NOT a PIF club

PIF are providing additional funding to all the teams just they have full control over those four. Every club will be getting at least marquee player I think.

It was always going to be difficult after the season they had in League 2 under Rob Edwards as they played really good football, the problem is when a team does that they end up losing most of the players which is what happened here, as well as the manager.

 

Ian Burchnall wasn’t great but Ferguson was absolutely abysmal, the mistake was not getting rid of him as soon as the season finished.

Probably already discussed on this thread (but couldn't be arsed looking). Ange Postecoglou will make Spurs a force again. It may take a couple of years to bed it down but he's a proper man manager, which is exactly what they need.

 

Will be interesting to watch. He typically hits a few bumps before it starts to come good.

I think it’s a surprisingly shrewd hire for Spurs. The guy is a winner. Jury’s out on whether he’ll be given any time, though.

I guess the biggest problem they have is they have a whole defence suited to 5 atb. That obligation to buy Porro for 40m can't help much either he looks absolutely useless as a RB.
