The Managerial Merry Go Round™ - Ivan Juric to Southampton

Recommended Posts

From the outside Parker has come across as a right selfish cunt.

He's basically decided that Bournemouths failure, can't be his failure. He can't be seen as a manager that got relegated again and thrown his players under the bus.

While he is right that this squad isn't good enough, he should have resigned in the summer when he knew he wasn't getting loads of dosh.

It's interesting that he gets loads of support within the media and I must say I was duped into thinking he might be a good coach but then I remembered what he was like at Newcastle, the second it got tough he jumped ship.

Perhaps this will be a master stroke from Parker, because his next job might actually be a PL job, he'd probably get an Everton job or whatever but you know the saying a cunt never changes his spots... or something like that.

Bournemouth should look at what Leeds did. Find someone with energy from elsewhere, who could potentially bring them back up next season, should they go down.

There’s a way to say it where you talk about strengthening the squad and then there’s a way of saying it where you completely undermine your players. The way Parker talked about it, it sounded like he was calling out his players as nowhere near good enough

It’s a much stronger league this season than it’s ever been, I do get that but as Bournemouth fans you don’t want your manager coming out with such defeatist comments game after game. They have a stronger squad than Eddie had and look what he achieved with a bit of positivity and bravery (caveat being the league wasn’t as strong back then).

Understandable that Parker wanted more but when it became apparent that wasn’t forthcoming he should have publicly backed his squad to succeed. Reeks of salvaging his own reputation by getting his ready-made (albeit probably warranted) excuses in place.

Slightly different in the “size” and potential of both of the clubs, surely? Bournemouth- without trying to be too condescending- are a well-run club punching above their weight. Rafa could see we had more in us but lacked the ambition and desire to do better.

The difference is context. Bournemouth are a club that are building to become a PL club, Newcastle were already a PL and had massive resources before MA arrived.

It's the same when people talk about Man Uniteds owners and say "look but they have spent 200m". Lost is the context about where they are and where they have come from.

Don't get me wrong, you do have to question why the likes of Bournemouth or Norwich think that you can come up from the championship and not have a slightly more ambitious plan yet still expect to survive.

Brighton and Brentford are the benchmark for the smaller clubs coming up.

There was nothing stopping Parker resigning after promotion and saying he wanted to try a "new project" or whatever. Kicking off 4 games into a season, knowing what he had signed up for is the issue.

The club is more of a joke than Newcastle under Ashley. The owner stated that he was selling up, having nothing to do with the day-to-day running of the club, so brought Lee Turnbull (former player in) to do that job. Keith Hill hates LT, so started only dealing with Swann (owner). Swann then starts having more involvement with the club again behind Turnbull's back.

Not a chance the club will exist in another 12 months. Criminally mis-managed by Swann. His only goal was to build a new stadium with plenty of business and leisure opportunities to fund his own business. Up there with Ashley for wanker status.

I am not saying Parker's points are wrong. But there is a difference between a multiple leagues and European cups winning manager  stating "I know what it takes and currently the owners are not backing me" and Scott Parker stating that.

To be fair to Parker imagine the effort and energy expended in getting out of the Championship, Saturday-Tuesday every week, only to be told "nah we'll let the same set of players get tanked every week in the big boy league". No excuse from the ownership.

tbf to Parker he's been calling out the owners all summer.

Find it weird how anyone on this board can be understanding of the reaction of the owners. Back your manager ffs. It's not the first time this summer Parker has voiced his concern about lack of ambition.

Seen someone on twitter whinging because Sky Sports showed us as the highest spending team since January by taking into account net spend. We went on for years and years about net spend.

Maybe I can shed a little extra light on the AFCB / Parker situation.

Last time in the PL we had a tilt at building a PL squad. All good fun. A series of unfortunate events conspired, including Howe burning himself out, players refusing to play, the Covid break coming at a bad time, goal line technology failing, crazy injury list, and more ending in relegation. Whatever. Down is down.

Up to then the owner had been funding to the tune of, relative to our size in the football world, monumental amounts. However, the relegation meant he wanted to change the strategy. Can't really object to that.

The planned training complex was put on hold, lots of senior pros out of contract were released and, over two Championship seasons, we sold about £125m of players but only spent about £15m replacing them in order to get us back in an even financial keel.

The new model was clear for all to see. We'd spend within our means and, if we went back up, restart the off-field investment to build up other aspects of the club. Always think long term on and off the pitch.

Parker knew this when he came. Yet he signed a bunch of players in Jan but now wants (wanted) to sell some of them saying he only signed them to get us up and they aren't good enough for the PL. He let us give them 3.5 year contracts.

That's so far from how we want to run the club it's crazy.

Meanwhile, since promotion was confirmed work on the training complex has resumed. This will restrict spending. He knew this.

Despite that he kept repeatedly moaning to the media about wanting more money to spend.

Then, nobody expected anything from the last three games but the way he reacted after Saturday was beyond the pale. To the national media he was demanding more players. To the local press he was saying he expected us to get worse results this season.

What do you think that says to the players? All great managers make players feel good about themselves so they can play almost beyond their ability. Parker dropped a bomb in the dressing room, seemingly looking to achieve the opposite.

He did his job last season, no complaints there. However, it's pretty telling that you'll struggle to find an AFCB fan unhappy he has gone. Not because we lost to three of the top teams. Not because we lost 9-0. Because he had no interest in the long term vision to build the club and instead only wanted to disparage the players and the owner to try and make whatever happens this season not his fault.

I've had 24 hours to think on it and, sad to say, it's good riddance.

Also, if there's truth in some of the stories now leaking out he really had become toxic in his attitude to the club.

Great info - thanks. Probably best it's happened now. 3 points from the first 4 games was th best you ever could have picked up. So hopefully you get someone good in ASAP!

Eddie Howe :D

Bring realistic though, as long as they appoint someone with an attacking philosophy they should do alright. We aren't the most demanding of fanbases and accept there's a very high chance we'll go down this year. Get phase one of the training complex complete, and have a man in charge that knows the squad and wants to try and score plenty in the Championship and I'll be happy.

'Effective' managers are one of the few ways to rile our fans. We gave Pulis his first job (sorry!) and he was hounded out.

Yeah, that's messed up. I found it hard to believe he wouldn't have been made aware of how the club wanted to function. Very poor from him. He's got talent, but he's too impatient and disruptive when he doesn't get his way.
