We were poor when it come to attacking, many a time we had only one player in the box and sometimes even none. At home, in a game usually considered as a big game on Tyneside, this wasn't acceptable. Yes we defended well, but its easier to defend in the way we did when we don't commit bodies forward or try and attack the opposition. We only did that in the last 10 to 15 minutes and even then it was mostly hit and hope to Ameobi. This is the ugly side of us under Pardew. We set up to not get defeated in the hope of nicking a goal. A tactic that is really really limited because it relies on someone in our side to come up with something special or for the opposition to make a mistake.

This was the way we set up many a time in the 5th place season and I thought we had moved on from that kind of set-up, play and tactics. Clearly not.

Arsenal were poor and there for the taking. With the right set-up, tactics and approach we could have won this game today but instead we have lost and that is the most disappointing thing. To play Anita and Tiote together at home should never be an option, regardless of who we are playing.

Two players doing the same job or looking to do the same job. The result they often got in the way of each other and we were always short of bodies in the final 3rd. We played far too much long ball today as well, Remy and Goufran fighting for high balls with their backs to goal...

Are you being critical just for the sake of it?

We played well today and deserve credit for doing so.

We didn't play well at all. A narrow 1-0 defeat to a set-piece goal at home to the team of the season may well read good, but in reality we were poor. We offered little goal threat, played too many long balls and were one paced playing at a low tempo. We contained them well enough but at the expense of getting at them.

we did play well, after they blew themselves out we matched them, probably even created the better chances. your bias is getting terrible. I'm voting for you for best non nufc fan in the awards.

Did we f*** play well. Playing well was us vs Palace, or us vs Chelsea. This was us playing containment football, the typical Pardew approach. Our best chance came from the face of Remy who chased down a back-pass that their 'keeper made a right balls of clearing. We didn't test their 'keeper once. The last 20 minutes were an eye-sore, players all over the place forcing play or aiming it long to that lump Shola.

ask mick v chelsea and you'll see how views differ. after they blew themselves out we went toe to toe with quite possibly the best team so far this season. the last 20mins, watch how many teams this season have arsenal so far back and punting it anywhere.

containment football ? first 15 aye, right to aswell knowing how arsenal come at you (even sir bob done that) then it was very even with us, if n aything looking the better.

Containment football for the entire match until they scored. We had a brief 10 minute spell in the first half and a bit of high pressing towards the final minutes in the first half which had them troubled but after the break it was all them until they scored. Then we started pushing them back but we didn't exactly threaten them. I was furious watching us lump it long or try to force the play, we had a good 10 minutes or so where some decent football and movement might have opened them up, but instead we aimed it long to Shola who did f*** all or wide to Hadiera who again did f*** all. Ben Arfa got into the box a few times but went for the glory and Santon sent in one or two decent crosses only for there to be n-one in the box.

Speaking of Hadiera, why the f*** was he brought on?

did they play containment football aswell considering how much krul had to do ?

For the home team we did not play well, the last 15 mins masks a pretty awful insipid performance IMO. I understand the tactic. But really before arsenal score we couldn't even get a touch of the ball, and doing nothing with it.

Eh?

Hilarious isn't it.

He must have missed that save from Sissoko in 1st half injury time for starters, probably downstairs in the bogs at the time.

Felt the defeat was harsh on us in a game with few clear cut chances. A silly Tiote foul and some questionable HBA decisions were what swung it Arsenal's way. Proud of how we competed though, we looked good.

Special mention to Debuchy today, who was outstanding. Cabaye, Colo & Tiote played well too.

So now HBA cost us the game?

Still absolutely gutted we didn't get a point from this. No way we should've lost. They were seriously there for the taking and it was an unlucky situation for their goal. Personally (maybe biased) I think Rosicky was part of 2-3 fouls that warranted a yellow card and he should've been off. With that said, we didn't really deserve a win either, a draw would've been a fair result.

I don't give a fuck about Arsenal or their play. All I know is that we went into a home game on the back of a big win full of confidence with two defensive midfielders and Remy up top on his own and for large parts of the game we did fuck all save a few one-off moments, until we went a goal behind. And even then we didn't create anything, we just hot it long in vain hope or played it wide for crosses even though we only ever had one or two bodies in the box anyway.

We played well in that we didn't get ripped a new one. We played well in that we restricted the team of the season to few chances and we played well defensively but attacking wise we were as poor as any of our poor periods this season.

Tactically Pardew got it wrong, at the start and when he made changes. With a 5 man midfield we were still out-numbered by arsenal who passed through us time and time again only to be confronted with our well marshalled wall at the back, that and the usual Arsenal fannying on playing one pass to many or being afraid to shoot.

When we did get on the ball we didn't do much with it.

Think it was a game that could've went either way really. None of the teams made any real threats, bar that one Giroud/Walcott chance. They had a few longshots, but we had chances, or half-chances aswell to make it even. When they figured to sit back with 10 men we couldn't find a way through and that was that really. Think it was good how we stood up to them, they are top of the league and there is a reason to it.

Both teams struggled to create and it could've gone either way. We played a decent game and draw really would have been a fair result.

Their goal was extremely soft and the free kick it came from was needlessly given away with Tiote niggling because Anita should have been awarded a free kick moments earlier.

I didn't get a good view of Sissoko's penalty claim but I was pretty close to the Debuchy claim and Flamini quite clearly pushed him, soft yes, but it was a penalty.

The ref let an awful lot go today with a number of obvious pushes unpunished.

We need Remy firing again; he wasn't at the races again today.

1st half one? was outside the box but should have been a free

I don't think people are witnessing two different matches here, though it seems that way, I'd tend to agree with both sides. I think we played well defensively, we contained and made one of the best teams in the league this year look toothless and devoid of ideas. A draw on the basis of that would have been a fair result, but also probably the best we could hope for.

Pardew only has two modes, defend or attack, there's no balance there and that was evident today, I don't agree we were also contained, it was more of an unadventurous side that were slow to move forward with the ball and content with keeping shape with or without the ball. That left us being predictable and slow and we'd have never broken Arsenal down that way.

In an attacking sense we were non-existent today and for that I have to agree with HTT we were poor. Until we can strike a good balance and know when and how to attack in numbers(which requires risk, not a Pardew forte) we'll never play a good all round game in matches like this.

Had we got the point or nicked a lucky goal we could never really have argued with the tactics, on the basis of losing the game toothlessly people are bound to be frustrated with the lack of ambition.

Its as though we were going to judge our worth on tiis one game, win and we will get top 5 finish, lose and we are doomed to mid table.

We gave them a fucking good game and had we had a little more faith and bottle from the off we could have gotten something from today. Its all still to play for a full half season left and anything ca happen, lets get January out of the way so we can all relax for the remainder f the season.

He was poor but at the same time he was massively isolated for the most part against the best centre back pairing the league has seen this season.

I'd thought Koscielny was out for a while, irritating that.

I didn't think we were too bad, we huffed and puffed as much as we could in the second half (after what was a decent enough first half) and I'd say we pretty much matched Arsenal throughout the game. Hopefully the players aren't too disheartened by today - the effort and work ethic was there. Unfortunately a mistake on our part cost us dearly but don't think we would have won the game really, both us and Arsenal cancelled each other out and I'd say it would have finished 0-0 on another day.

Feels like I say this every matchday but how fucking wank was the East Stand linesman? There was one throw-in call after about 25 minutes which defied the laws of physics and the ref even overturned after our players went absolutely mental about it.

No reason a professional should be down hearted after that IMO. Next three games should see us bounce back.

He was looking at the ref all the time as he had no idea what he was doing, that throw farce was just the start of it.
