Rafa's getting rid of the deadwood. 7.5M is a relatively low fee these days for an international player with 4 years left on his contract, so I think the fee and the destination tells you all about how "good" he has been for us. He was very good in attack to begin with when he started for us, but has massively trailed off since then and been very inconsistent. He's one paced though, and was often made to look a fool by rather poor midfielders as a result. I think he genuinely cared but really lashed out in weird ways and had some embarrassing moments (Southampton away last season, intentional red). Best of luck to him though. Much like they kept saying Anita was a Dutch international and Ajax graduate, De Jong was Ajax captain, Gini best player in Holland, even Sels best keeper in Belgium. These things really don't mean anywhere near as much as the weight some people give to them. Janmaat himself was player of the year for an actual Premier League side. So was Rob Elliot.
