He played well at Man Utd and nearly scored, played well against Chelsea, and scored and played well at Man City. That's 3 of the 4 Champions League teams (plus he started against the other one and there was a debate whether it was a red...so is today his first league start against a 'normal' team?), so I think he's started more than fine tbh.
