Guest
That's not exactly a good argument for Lascelles' inclusion.
Bimpy474
Call me old fashioned but i would prefer my central defender to be a defender first, it's not as if Jamal can't pass the thing. To say he not good enough for England under Gareth f***ing Southgate because he's not good enough on the ball is f***ing utter tripe. Can Jamal defend - yes, is he good in the air - yes, is he ok on the ball - yes, is he leader - too f***ing right he is. If it's about him not being good enough on the ball then James Bumblefuckname of Burnley must be Franco Baresi. Jamal deserves a call up because is and has been a very good defender this season. I agree with you that defenders who defend first and attack later shouldn't be overlooked or scoffed at, not at all. As I said, I think he's a quality defender. Secondly, I don't think it's utter fucking tripe. You can't go to the World Cup with the aim of looking to dominate possession and having to break down teams with one quality (on the ball) Center Back and another OK (on the ball) Center Back. Especially against the better teams, they'll figure you out. Personally I would take him if I were manager, but I also wouldn't place so much emphasis on England dominating possession as we're not good enough to win like that. He doesn't yet suit the way England want to play, that's unfortunately the way it is for Jamaal. But I agree with people that if some other mid-table fodder can get the nod then you'd have to wonder why wouldn't he get a chance in the friendlies at least. It is like, do you actually think Gareth Southgate is going to have us playing some sort of possession based football that would be far far above anything Jamal could fit into ? Tripe doesn't describe it to be honest...utter arse gravy might be better.
Figures 1-0 Football
Is Lascelles even that bad on the ball? Looked fairly comfortable this season.
Bimpy474
Is Lascelles even that bad on the ball? Looked fairly comfortable this season. That's my point, he doesn't have to be some sort of Glenn Hoddle sweeper does he. He's decent on the ball, i'll be fucked if i'm ruling him out of playing for England because of how Gareth Southgate wants us to play ffs.
louistoon
Which games did Lascelles miss this season? Man United (a) Chelsea (a) I think those were two... .. and Lecister, Watford, West Brom. Laughbable we conceded 15 goals in 5 games when he was out of the side, three of them at home to midtable/relegation sides. Then 25 in 25 with him in the side (well 24 in 24 1/2 as he was off injured when bournmouth scored their winner. We would have been relegated without him no question. Player of the season by several furlongs.

Leicester won the Premier League very recently with two of them. This idea that a central defender should be more John Stones than John Terry is utter bullshit

steve_69
Again - John Terry had great distribution. He wasn't known for it though was he. He was known for being a very good, ultra-commited no-nonsense defender. I dare say more CBs have had excellent distribution than they were given credit for, because ultimately they were judged on their defensive capabilities, and rightly so IMO. I'm not interested in the defensive capabilities of a striker, i'm interested in whether he can score goals. Anything beyond that is a bonus. John Stones is hailed as some sort of CB of the future despite being a bit of a liability. I'd far rather have a defender that can be relied upon to defend well and if he happens to have good distribution as well, that's just a bonus. The College Dropout
That wasn’t my point. A few times people have made it seem like his footballing abilities were limited. His only real limitation was pace. Needed a relatively deep defence and a quick partner. Bringing the ball out, left foot, right foot nee bother. Jamie Carragher was a CB who I think was excellent but pretty limited on the ball.
The College Dropout
I agree a lot of players get away with being better on the ball but sometime dodgy at the back. Varane’s rapid which helps with a high line. And he’s a big strong lad. But even last season I felt Pepe was the better defender and player. Antics aside Pepe was under rated. Imperious in the Euros too.

Player of the season by several furlongs. Thanks for answering this and what was going to be my next question. We have one of the best defences in the league outside of the top 6 or 7. It's by and large down to this lad and his organisational skills and influence like. That's not to play down the efforts of the team like, I just think we're a far stronger side with Wor Jam. samptime29
The deal to bring him here looks great in hindsight. Development has been excellent. Look what happened after he bollocked Diame - he's on super zest now. He's a leader for us. Must not sell. Vital.

John P
365 always seem bang on the money with us. Dan Storey writes a lot of their articles and I'm sure I read somewhere that his father or grandfather was a Newcastle fan, so maybe he has a bit of a soft spot for us. His articles are also very good.

joeyt
West Ham are planning a £15m summer move for Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles, according to The Sun on Sunday. Lascelles, 24, has starred under Rafa Benitez this season, and signed a new contract in October until June 2023.
Dave
I'm not one for trying to put mythical values on players but £15m is laughable. At least make it believable.
