Yorkie
This isn't the first resurgence we've seen from Shelvey. He went through a couple of spells under Rafa where you could tell he was really putting the miles in on and off the training ground and he was effective for doing so. The latter half of 17/18 in particular springs to mind. But his runs of form have always had a life expectancy of a few months before he inevitably tails off and we're back to him being a liability. Tbh I don't even think he's that good even when he's in form. Decent enough, for sure, but I can't remember many games where I've thought he was absolutely fantastic out anything. I think he's a decent enough bloke and, on reflection, the slagging of his character has probably been unfair in the past because he wouldn't have survived Rafa or even Howe if he didn't have generally decent mentality and application. But I would have absolutely no problems with him being sold in the summer. I was ready to never see him in the side again only six or seven weeks ago. STM
Again, it comes down to recruitment plans. We can't shift/buy a whole squad and it wouldn't be wise to. I think natural progression would see Shelvey playing second fiddle to Bruno or another new signing, next season.
WarrenBartonCentrePartin
This trend of apologising for anything slightly negative has to stop like.
wormy
I think it's as simple as he's very easily suggestible. If he's allowed to slack off he'll slack off. If he's forced to put the effort in then he'll do so and after a while you'll see an uptick in performances. He's played a part in this fantastic run and I'll be grateful for that. But he's not someone I want to rely on if we aim to improve year on year. Keep him around another year or two if he's happy to play a bit part but that's about it as far as I'm concerned. dcmk
From what I recall he has always been a really harsh critic of himself. So don't think it's out of the ordinary.
1892er
Thought other than a bad error first half, he played really well. Quality assist.

Sandrotastico
Bar a couple a of times he lost the ball, I thought he was fantastic again. The amount of ground he covers now in one game is equal to a season under Bruce. I also think not having Big Joe next to him today took him a little time to get used too. Great ball, great tracking back and blocking. Well Played!

Kid Icarus
Love that Fraser is referred to as Wee Man in quite a formal way, like that's what it says on his post.
Nine
Some sloppy moments tonight but overall he had another good game, what a ball in for Wood.
Lush Vlad
Both he and Bruno covered the cut back into the box really well. Often seemed to anticipate it and be in the right place when they were tracking back. After a shaky start, he looked really good. What is more impressive, that it was mainly due to his defensive work. Not for his quality passing or anything. Although that delightful cross for Wood’s goal obviously helped. I thought he looked better having someone next to him in a more conventional midfield and not playing on his own in front of the centre backs. Newcastle Fan
Thought he was one of the best players on the pitch yesterday, put it a lot of good tackles and moved the ball around really well.
mouldy_uk
I actually love watching his work rate under Howe as it’s night and day compared to under Bruce.
Guest HTT II
Massive work ethic, but average overall for me. Romeu bossed him and showed him how to do all that defensive work, spray simple passes about and not get caught in possession or ball watching. Guest HTT II
I do like how it seems his finger pointing (to others) seems to have disappeared from his game. It’s like his mind is now occupied with what he has to do rather what others have to or should. That’s always been an issue with his game.
buzza
Apart from when he was dispossessed in the first half, he had a solid game. A 100 times what he was under Bruce! Good cross for the goal and was a decent outlet most of the time. We can´t ask him to be a defensive destroyer because he will never be that, but his positional play and covering of passing lines was pretty good yesterday. I actually thought the link up with Bruno was very good. P.S. We sorely missed the power pack that is Joe Linton in midfield, they won too many of the disputes in the middle, and oreol had too easy a game for me. I’d also add it took a bit time for him and Bruno to not keep gravitating towards the same spot on the pitch. There were times in the first half they were practically on top of each other. Both need a fast Tiote type player alongside them due to their physical shortcomings. It’s going to fascinating to see how EH blends his midfield over the next 14 months. That one looked like a hospital pass out from Dan Burn I think it was. It forced Shelvey into trying to poke it past Romeu, which didn't come off. Just on our first goal, but credit also to Targett and Fraser for working an overload on the left side. When it came back to Shelvey, there was no pressure on him. To be fair to him, in that moment, he clearly tried to side step his opponent in that very small time frame from getting the ball, being closed down, and seeing space in front of him and it would work more often than not, just the opposition player read it and took it off him, and then he was too slow to react to do anything about it. It was a clever idea in his mind I must say, and something I enjoy seeing someone try. Good stuff from their player too.
