Moyes is going to go soon even without Defoe being sold. He obviously won't get money to spend unless he sells first and even then there isn't much guarantee he gets to use the money. My feeling is he'll probably give up at the end of January but if he does stay, would they be tempted to keep him in the job for the sake of not paying out another compensation package and risk relegation with him?

God they're in such a mess. Like someone said earlier, they're in all kinds of lose-lose situations.

Nobody will spend £10m+ on a 34-year-old and he's worth £100m to Sunderland, so I don't see it happening. Maybe if he threw a strop but, to be honest, Defoe seems a decent bloke. He was saying how people would lose their jobs if they went down, is really good to that Lowery kid too. Just wish he stopped scoring past us!

West Ham must have had some pretty firm encouragement that it could happen given how unlikely it seems to outsiders

Defoe will just end up getting a pay rise from sunderland.

can they afford that, have they got scope in FFP?

It's their massive debt that's the problem, and they'll find a way to get around that if they need to.
