Hanshithispantz
Was there not more to the Barry/Alonso situation? Sure it's been mentioned on here before but I might be wrong.
mrmojorisin75
wasn't it one of the sources of benitez falling out with the board or something, that they wouldn't buy gareth barry for him? something like that
summerof69
Also wasn't the alonso/barry decision more nuanced ? obviously a mistake but he was battling new rules in terms of homegrown players and also owners at the time.
Elliottman
Was there not more to the Barry/Alonso situation? Sure it's been mentioned on here before but I might be wrong. He needed to raise money so had to sell Alonso.
Guest
The man he finally did get to replace Alonso flunked massively as well.
Village Idiot
The man he finally did get to replace Alonso flunked massively as well. Aquilani was it? I made the same mistake as him and put him in my FF team that year
Hanshithispantz
Aquilani was a good player like, he would have only been there a short time before Rafa walked wouldn't he?
Village Idiot
Aquilani was a good player like, he would have only been there a short time before Rafa walked wouldn't he? He was a bit of a sick note I seem to recall? He never got going and then Hodgson got rid of him the following season.
Hanshithispantz
Checked he was there a year with Rafa, for some reason I never thought Rafa completed his final season with Liverpool. Where did he play for them if anyone can remember?
Bimpy474
I think Rafa said himself a 70% to 80% hit rate on player transfers is excellent and one a manager would be happy with. His record is not flawless, and if you ask a Liverpool fans about the squad he left them, some will say it was a bit lob sided. Now that was partly down to the transfers budget being lowered by the American duo and, in all honesty some poor buys. In the main though Rafa's transfer record is very good, which is all we need to really worry about long term.
mrmojorisin75
high success rates significantly harder when you're bargain hunting as well obvs
healthyaddiction
Bellamy would have been classed as signing a relegated Coventry City's scraps. Judge a player on what they do wearing our shirt IMO Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Bellamy was 22 years old and played almost every game for Coventry in the Prem the previous season. How was he Coventry's scraps?
Guest
He wasn't their scraps but I remember the move being criticised.

healthyaddiction
He wasn't their scraps but I remember the move being criticised. Not denying that to some extent, but it's very different from this Joselu lad. edit: my memory was more people thought it was a lot of money for him. mrmojorisin75
He wasn't their scraps but I remember the move being criticised. it was not initially well received at all, neither robert either tbh (more that no one knew who he was)

Not denying that to some extent, but it's very different from this Joselu lad. edit: my memory was more people thought it was a lot of money for him. He'd not pulled up many trees when Coventry went down. Missed a ton of chances but his game clicked straight away here. Still missed a load of one on ones but his all round game was perfect for us. Ghandis Flip-Flop
Because he was a Striker who'd moved for big money and hadn't scored many goals. I certainly don't remember a massive queue of teams lining up to buy him. If I recall correctly he was also Bobby's second choice behind Jeffers. In the same way Robert was second choice to Zenden Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Figures 1-0 Football
We'll sign superstars that turn out to be duds, we'll sign some dross players that turn out to be decent for us. It happens in football, not just for us but for everyone. There is only merit in evaluating players based on their performances in an NUFC shirt, because what they've done with other clubs before us or after us is pretty irrelevant. At this moment in time, we have a world class manager choosing the players rather than a fraud like Pardew, I'll more than happy give any person Rafa chooses to sign a decent chance. He's bound to pick some duds, but every manager does. If Rafa thinks that Joselu can do a job for us, then I'm more than happy to trust that judgement until I've seen otherwise. Clark and Murphy, two signings last season that 90% of our support, me included, thought were shit - but two players who ultimately helped us win the league and promotion at the first attempt. That said, I understand why people would like to evaluate players before they sign - although I just don't think there is much to it and there is absolute no point in writing someone off as 'shit' before they've even kicked a ball for us. xLiaaamx
The age of the internet means every players numbers are analysed massively without the player being watched and conclusions are then drawn off those numbers. But as we all know, its not as simple as that and that's why some managers are so much better than others.
Guest firetotheworks
I remember thinking that Bellamy was an underwhelming signing at the time, and Jeffers would have been as well. I was excited about Robert though.

xLiaaamx
If Robert really was second choice, then I'm glad we missed out on Zenden.
Stottie
When Bellamy signed, I remember Coventry fans coming on the old forum with a photoshop of Bellamy as a Barbie Ken doll with a tagline of "He gets in the box! He falls over!" or something similar. I don't know how representative they were, but they seemed well glad to see the back of him.
