themanupstairs
I wonder what that actually sounds like? Possibly a loud shrieking scream followed by the sultry sounds of liquid bowel movement as Ashley sanctions a bid.

Mole_Toonfan
I'm assuming we're not going for the Greek guy and McCarthy. Otherwise that is a lot of midfielders. Aye it would be one or the other i imagine.
HaydnNUFC
Everton wanted £25m for him didn't they? Can't see us bidding more than £14m if true. Samaris or McCarthy, get shot of Ginge and our CM is sorted. Onto a ST, a LB and a #10 and we're looking canny. Hopefully anyway.

afar
Seems odd we are still being linked with wingers according to the Ronny Gill. I would have thought Ritchie, Atsu, Aarons and Murphy is sufficient cover, unless Rafa sees one of that quartet as a number 10.
Guest
Maybe Rafa wants Aarons to have a season of first-team football himself? Loan him out for a year, get Ojo to cover him while he gets a full season under his belt and have him pushing Murphy & Ritchie for one of the two slots. Sho Time
Tbh from the little I've seen of both players Aarons is twice the player Ojo is, so can't see that happening as Rafa would be weakening the squad.
Andy84
McCarthy would be a great signing. We really need some PL know how in our side, we are slowly building an exciting pacy young squad but someone like him in CM and another good striker would be awesome
Hughesy
Can't say I've ever been impressed by McCarthy. Not sure if I'm missing something, but wouldn't go near him for anything north of £15m.

I don't have enough faith in Perez, De jong and Diame to see us right in a crucial role in a Rafa team.
Skeletor
I'd have faith in Shelvey as a number 10. Would prefer someone else to come in but goalkeeper and striker are far more important after sorting out the central midfield.

If we sign McCarthy or Samaris, as well as this Merino being finalised, we'll have Hayden as an option in CM also. Could Shelvey be moved to #10? His defensive work is utter s**** anyway. loki679
If De Jong can stay fit I think he could do a decent job for us there, I like his style of play and he seems an intelligent player with a good eye for a pass. As long as we have some pace around him to do the running I think that could work out.
KaKa
Maybe the Gibson transfer to Everton has smoothed things regarding our pursuit of McCarthy?
Mole_Toonfan
I'd have faith in Shelvey as a number 10. I wouldn't, he needs space to operate in to spray passes about and has pretty much nothing required to be a very good number 10. We absolutely need a no 10 more than anything else IMO considering what system Rafa will use, none of what we currently are anywhere near good enough and a quality one will change things more than any other signing could. a 4231 falls flat on it's face without one, it's absolutely vital that is sorted before the end of August. ponsaelius
Rafa's number #10 isn't one in the purest sense though. He got the best form of Gerrard's career out of playing him there. Maybe he wants to do similar with Shelvey.

He had aspects to his game which allowed him to be successful, I really fail to see how Shelvey does.
toontownman
They bought and trained shelvey to be Gerrard's successor. Would agree he is best from a bit deeper though. .

He'd be fourth choice, still decent, and we wouldn't be left short. Would allow Aarons a full season of football. I'd do it.
