With Hanley and Hayden can play there we would prob have enough with Lascelles and Mbemba and maybe Dummet. A left back, centre mid and another winger would be nice but can't change everything

Young lad Sterry is also primarily a CB isn't he? Although he's listed as a RB here and there. Rafa might rate him, he's about the only player from our reserves who has been called to train with the senior players.

I thought he was mainly Right Back. Mbabu is centre though and we have that Findlay in reserve i suppose

Abbey Clancy is married to Peter Crouch so technically that is a photo of Crouch (Abbey Crouch).

I'm a bit surprised that we only seem to be after one more Centre Back. 46 games to play (not including any Cup games) and currently our only specialist Centre Backs are Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba (who will be away at the ACON for up to 6 weeks). We've currently got Paul Dummett, Jesus Gamez, Isaac Hayden and Daryl Janmaat (if he stays) who can play Centre Back but you'd think we'd want 4 actual Centre Backs. Maybe Rafa thinks one of the younger players will make the step up?

Are those qualifiers even finished yet?

No but DR Congo have already qualified according to this: -

without looking at all the second place teams if CAF beat DR Congo in the final game they could still miss the tournament

Yes, I think I read they are almost certain to qualify. A draw will do for them. Let's face it, they're bound to qualify as we as Newcastle fans would prefer it if they didn't.

I'd rather another CB like but I think we would be fine with what we have now if that's how it panned out.

What we have now? Two centre backs and others who can play out of position. Luckily Rafa is after another CB.

Players we've got who can play CB

Mbemba

Lascelles

Dummett

Hayden

Mbabu

As I said would prefer another specialist CB in but if we didn't for whatever reason I think we would be OK till Jan at least.

It would be a huge mistake not to add at least one CB, we lost 2, 3 if you count williamson leaving in Jan. We could get lucky with injuries, you never know but that's not the Newcastle way and we are really thin in that dept right now. I'm all for developing a partnership between Laschelles and Memba but we need more cover to get us through a championship season.

Ideally we need another couple or cbs. We could live to January on just Hanley coming in though.

Lascelles, mbemba, hanley with hayden, dummett, gamez and maybe other younglings  to step up should be fine.

Might also be frugal to get a loan or wait til January anyway so we know where we are at. It's hard brining in new players when lascelles and mbemba should be our first choice.

Understand that Grant Hanley has told Blackburn he is keen on idea of moving to #NUFC

Dummett and Gamez may be too busy playing at left back and right back to cover centre back. We really don't want to be playing players out of their best position if we can help it. One of the reasons we got relegated is not having proper cover for injuries and suspensions. Apparently Janmaat had never even played as a centre back before we had to deploy him there. We had 4 specialist centre backs last season and at times we were down to one of them due to suspensions and injuries.

I'd buy a more attacking left back and use Dummett as a centre half. That would give us Gamez/Mbabu at right back, Lascelles, Mbemba, Dummett and Hanley at centre half and Haidara/new left back. Then we have Hayden and Anita who can fill in and Sterry and Findlay who have first team experience also.

Thing is.  I think if we sign Hanley, he will be starting most weeks with Mbemba (assuming he stays).

I really like Lascelles and would be keen to see him develop further, playing week in, week out.  If memory serves, Rafa chucked Taylor straight back in at the expense of Lascelles in one of his early games.  That was after seeing how bad he was previously.  Was it Southampton?

We definitely need more than 2 starting quality centre backs, of course.  I just wonder whether Rafa is keen on Lascelles or not?
