gbandit
I’m generally optimistic about our players but Murphy is someone I’d given up on until early 2023. Pleased for him and us, will be good back up
SEMTEX
Big mistake given the shoulder. Going off my extensive research (seeing @Rocker post on the socials each week when his shoulder pops out), it should probably be the glue factory for wor Jacob. TRC
Don't think team talk would get an exclusive, but hes contracted till 2027, not like he needs a contract.
The College Dropout
Murphy is contracted until 2027? WHAT? I tuned out during the latter days of Ashley.
The Butcher
Giving him a new deal would be mental like. We need better. Much better.

Its the difference between needing to bring Jacob Murphy into the squad instead of Matt Richie. That's the evolution. He might be 2nd choice RW right now but in 6/12 months he will be 3rd choice. You still need a 3rd choice. Especially ones who are notoriously good eggs who have proven will run through a brick wall for the team. New contract does not = key player. New contract = protected investment.

His stock has risen since Eddie took over, someone will give us money for him.
TBG
Didn't he start his career as lone striker playing the target man role?

Yes he had a purple patch round about that time he scored that belter v Burnley so we gave him a 5 year contract. Fair play to him, if he sees it out then he’d have been here for 11 years. Personally I love his shenanigans.

tgarve
He’s just going to be the Richie 3/4th choice role and a good egg toon fan and perfect for that role imo

With 3,5 years left and him already being 28 there's absolutely no need for a new deal. No need at all if we want to compete with the best. Good egg or not. SEMTEX
Apart from we have no idea what is in his current contract, or his *new* contract, and what that means for the club. Probably a creative accounting activity as much as anything.

Eddie confirmed was performed as key hole surgery so slightly less invasive no timeline but he quoted 8/12 weeks recovery then fitness to bring back up so won't be anytime soon. Obviously we don’t know the figures involved, but it’s almost a (much) lower level version of the Bruno situation. We’ve probably decided (after pushing from his agent no doubt…) that his contributions over a period of time have been of a higher value than whatever he was getting paid. So in order to protect ourselves from someone coming along and offering him more money, we’ve give him a pay rise and added a year on as part of that. It also helps with FFP by extending players' contracts.
Conjo
Would have preferred if we just gave him a wage increase without extending his contract. He's done good lately, is a good character and bonus for being a boyhood fan so it would be the right thing to do and send a signal to all other players that if they improve they will be rewarded, but if he is even remotely close (like Ritchie is now) to getting into our team in 4+ years time, something has gone terribly wrong at some point between now and then like

Ticks homegrown box, versitile, good cover, starting in cup competitions, etc. Was here when it was shit, so knows the good/bad times at the club. Cheaper than spending money on bringing in someone who might upset the atmosphere.

No extension. He'll be 32ish when his current deal is done.
