Jacob "The Juice" Murphy

Almiron has something like 6 assists total right?

Put it this way - Cisse scoring banana shot volleys and worldies every week was clearly going to be unsustainable. Miggy had a version of that. Murphy legitimately creates a lot of chances from RW. His general play can be hit or miss but he does create quality chances.

Which is a very recent thing for Murphy and he has only managed it this season after years.

His fbref suggest he's been doing that well for some time now. Last season he got 10 goal contributions in 14 starts and 7 further sub appearances. This season he has 10 goal contributions in 14 starts and 4 appearances off the bench.

That's a year of being pretty effective in the final third.

It's the all-round game and goalscoring that's sometimes very, very bad. He creates chances though.

It's been true since about March 2023. It's just a surprising amount of people have all suddenly noticed it at once.

I can't really believe he's going to stay like this, as he's always had up and down spells. My view is the pressure to produce gets to him. But all the same he's been consistently producing up spells for a while now.

I still firmly think a new top quality RW will do revolutionary things for us, even if his goal contribution numbers end up being similar to what Murphy's been offering lately. But I think what @Unbelievable is saying about Murphy possibly affecting how much of our resources we should spend there is a valid point.

Maybe we could do with a kid to compete with Murphy who has the right profile for a Howe team and strong underlying historic stats. Happy to get their break in the Premier League and be moulded by Eddie, from a cheaper part of the world for PSR reasons. Somewhere like Gambia... :shifty:

Dare I say there was a moment where I thought he's in danger of becoming abit too predictable with that whipped ball across he tries regularly. If defenders were wise to it. However it's such a dangerous tactic that it's almost unstoppable when done right. But as long as he varies it up occasionally and tries over things to keep the opponent guessing.

Thought he and Gordon were our best players, especially first half when everyone else just looked a little off it.

It's the general play on the ball that is fairly easily improved.

The creativity will be pretty hard to equal let alone surpass.

Didn’t think it was his best performance last night. But watching back the highlights and he was involved in almost every key attack.

Been mulling over his performance since the match and I’d have it down as possibly his most complete although I’m not sure that’s the best description.

It didn’t have the highs of an amazing finish or assist which he has in his locker despite attempts at both but nor did it have any moments when he’s easily bullied off the ball or he plays a simple pass stray and puts a teammate in trouble.

Maybe most rounded performance?

Undroppable right now. Him and Isak have something. That ball was top draw and we should be playing it more.

The touch to get himself the space was fantastic, too.

He's had decent spells before and then regressed. At the start of the season he was absolutely awful and was huge flaw in the side but as the other parts started to find form Murphy did too and now with Tonali in the midfield he seems to be playing at a higher level than he ever has. Isak and Jacob as mentioned seem to dovetail perfectly. The key is sustaining this form. The fact he played well today after a poor performance last week is very encouraging.

His ball striking is absolutely incredible if we’re being honest.

And with two feet. Admirable. Yet folk still like to isolate him for criticism at the match.

He has his flaws, no player is perfect. But what a season he is having.

To reemphasise my point from the other day. I want us to go after a right footer to play RW and that is based on watching him for us this season.

The balance of the team is much better and Isak clearly loves playing with him/a more natural winger on that side.
