Jacob "The Juice" Murphy

Recommended Posts

From "AAAAARGH JUST PUT IT IN THE NET!!!!"

The Howe effect.

If we had brought in a RW in the summer for around 40mill, Bakayoko for eg, there's absolutely no way they'd be as productive as Murphy is right now. He's raised the standard so high that anyone we bring is gonna have to be a blockbuster purple, and even then, they'll have to earn the spot from him.

I fucking love this guy man he has it all, a childhood fan, a redemption arc, a one man meme factory and also rather good at football

We still need a RW, really dont like seeing either Gordon or Barnes in that position.

But maybe we shouldnt focus on an established expensive signing and rather get an exiting young talent who doesnt expect to take his place in the first team ASAP.

We could probably get a Bakayoko this summer and "Howe" him into the team like Gordon, whereas I think last summer there'd have been a pressure for him to hit the ground running after last season.

True. Maybe our 'blockbuster purple' on the right IS Jacob Murphy!

I mean as much as Murphy form is insane, and he’s had some highs in previous season and high performance metrics, we can’t get misty eyed and change RW approach.

The form will drop off, so will still need that top RW and can’t fall into the trap we done with Almiron.

Just Murphy has proved he can be a solid squad player and relied upon when needed over next season maybe two if his physical output remains (he’s now moving into his 30s don’t forget). Said it last season when Trippier was linked away he could be the back up RB, and maybe that could be the option for 27/28 if Trips stays for one more season. Means we can manoeuvre for other positions in meantime.

Dont think its fair to compare Murphy to Almiron.

Jacob Murphy has been much more reliable over time. Almiron had like one or two months where everything he touched turned to gold.

I don't think there's any indication his form drops off, the thing is that even with him being a genuinely very good player, he's still a fair ways off players like Salah and Saka, you could say the same about Gordon and Barnes too now though, I don't think there's anything between the 3 of them, but we're short at RW so that will likely be what we look at.

Hot Take:

Maybe Rafa knew what he was doing

If Tuchel ever uses his 3 at the back system for England, I think Murphy would be incredible as a right sided wing back in that setup.

It was how Rafa had us lineup towards the end of his tenure, when we were really starting to put something together, with Almiron, Rondon and Ayoze as the front three. Think Murphy would have ended up as a right wing back in that setup, and been very good.

He’s not good enough to play international football. His running and covering works so well in our system. He made an absolutely lung busting run from defence to overlap Tripps in the 1st half that typified his attributes. He also received a ball on the by line in acres of space and immediately ran it out of play.

No doubt he meant to score, it was right down my eyeline.

One of the standout players atm for the one of the (if not the) most inform teams in the best league in the world.

I’ve always maintained there was a player in Murphy, unless England turn into high energy pressing machine he wouldn’t fit in. Let’s just appreciate what he brings to our system.

He might or might not fit in into the England squad. But to say he is not good enough for International football is silly imo.

I'm old enough to remember when Murphy and Dan Burn were deemed not good enough for us by many on here :)

TBH I always thought he offered something and often made things happen when he came on as a sub, but the level he has reached could not have been predicted by anyone. The sheer joy and pride he has always displayed playing for Newcastle makes his success all the more satisfying.

Problem for him is he’ll never get in over Trent in that position.
