huss9
ritchie needs to be pulled infield if he wants to stay in the team. atsu getting better, and we could do with murphy's pace and directness on the other wing. merino was class. lejeune will develop a decent partnership with mbemba or clark. poor distribution from elliot today. really need a LB and striker asap, then a GK and number 10. relámpago blanco
I take a lot of positives out of today. I tbink we might have got something if Shelvey had not done that. I k ow it is the rules but you can lunge in fairly dangerously and potentially cause serious injury and get booked. Put you foot on them doing know damage and it is a straight red. Those are the rules though. I guess it's similar in that you can batter someone almost to death and get less than you would for defrauding an insurance company out of a couple of grand. AyeDubbleYoo
Seen some spectacularly strong opinions on how bad this was, can't understand it myself. Me neither, it was pretty good until the red. Injuries have to be left aside really, that's just luck.
Numbers
Seen some spectacularly strong opinions on how bad this was, can't understand it myself. The whole gameplan went out the window, injuries first then a brain dead moment. Before that I thought we looked the most likely to score on the break. Pissed me off the commentators saying this is how hard the premier league is after our whole game plan was decimated due to injuries and a fucking idiotic moment. Reading some comments you would think we had just been totally outplayed by a League 2 side.

afar
Kane's tackle will soon be forgotten about but really think that if you are sending folks off for what Shelvey did (which you absolutely should) you need to be sending them off for scissor challenges through the back at high speed like that one, it was shocking and irrelevant that he got the ball. Cost us a good player for probably a prolonged period.
Figures 1-0 Football
My thoughts... We were well in the contest and defending really well up until the sending off. Despite two injuries to defenders, our makeshift back four were doing really well. I thought Kane's challenge was a really bad one, possibly red worthy - but I only saw it live and haven't seen it again. Tottenham weren't causing us huge problems, they were restricted to long range shots which weren't doing anything and we were lively on the break. Atsu particularly caused them all sorts of problems, I thought he was really good today. I'd say despite Tottenham bossing possession with sideways passing, we probably had the better chances in the first half and could easily have been ahead. Shelvey - absolutely ridiculous. I saw it and I was in the Gallowgate, he was never going to get away from that. Ridiculous. Deserves a ban and he ultimately cost us something from that game. We were at 6s and 7s after the red and it really gave Spurs the momentum. Inevitably they were going to score. I think I'd have bought Merino on immediately after the red in place of Perez but I understand why he didn't as we wouldn't have had any subs left. I think highly of Merino from what I've seen of him so far in preseason and the short stint today. He covers a ridiculous amount of ground and is an excellent passer. I would not be surprised if he makes that place his own while Shelvey is out. Overall I think there is a lot of positives to take from today and from what I saw we'll easily be safe this season. Spurs were one of the best teams in the league last year and we matched them up until a suicidal red from Shelvey. Our system will work really well in this league, providing the team stay focussed and switched on and don't do anything like today.

Some people loathe tactical football and dislike rafas approach to the game. This will manifest itself greatly when we go on a bad run and the what if merchants come out. Segun Oluwaniyi
It looks to me that this will be a solid side that is difficult to beat. Teams of this nature generally survive, so I am optimistic going forward. It is imperative that Murphy and whoever else Ashley can scrap together funds for hit the ground running because they don't look particularly dangerous or cohesive going forward and I understand that this was the case last season as well. Dan Gleebals
Nothing positive about losing three players in one game, whatever the reason. We did ok though despite this and should have had a pen, which could have changed things alot. Shelvey - played right into alli's hands. It should have been the other way around. Idiot. I wouldn't have anyone else managing us personally. I wouldn't want anyone else either, i did dislike the way we set up against lesser team especially at home (last season bascially) but with better players, we will play better and that wouldn't really enter into it anymore. I mean any team with Colback in it isn't going to play like Holland in 1974 is it But today especailly after Merino came on, even with 10 men, there was more movement and less long ball that we saw first half, admittedly Spurs could play in 1st gear but for some reason i wasn't massively disappointed. We need more creativity that's obvious, and that's where the problem lies, we won't spend enough imo to address the glaring problems in the squad. r0cafella
Defensively we look fine imo, it's just the final 3rd that really worries me. We look fine because of the defensive structure, wingers tucking in, the AMC dropping back in to midfield in the defensive phase and fullback who are diligent rather than spectacular take this away and we would be a mess. Dr Venkman
Struggled for lots of meaningful posession against one of the best sides in the league, shock horror. Despite that (made much worse by the injuries and devastated by the red card) we were relatively well organised and never packed in. In past years that would have ended up 4-0 at least. Couple of bright sparks going forward, glad Gayle got some playing time without injury and Atsu was a constant threat. Can't think of anyone that had a genuinely bad game, Shelvey aside. Glad we've got Merino to step straight in. Need a couple of signings, as we already knew. That said, Rafa's hands were tied in terms of changing things. Next. Agreed. At the game today my overriding feeling was we're crying out for a more versatile striker who can make things stick up front. The amount of times the ball ends up back with Elliot and him launching it forward, it's unavoidable when you concede that much possession but there's nothing Gayle can do with it. Though Merino looked tidy and I've no doubt about him filling in for Shelvey but he did seem to get turned alarmingly quickly. I thought we looked good for the draw in the first half, but in the second they went straight through the middle of our team 4 times, that can't be allowed to happen. I didn't see clearly but i'm willing to bet Lascelles was at fault, he gets beaten too easily.
Altamullan
Recorded the match and just watched first half. Thought Manquillo, Atsu and Perez played well plus Hayden made a decent contribution. Our 'big hitters' Ritchie, Shelvey and Gayle seemed to struggle/looked well marshalled. Didn't realise we'd lost Dummet and Lejeune to injury. Really limited Rafa's options to mix it up (not to mention forthcoming sending off). Even though Spurs are a very good side, so clear we need more quality. Shearergol
Said it before but Gayle isn't good enough to create his own chances. Really need Atsu and Ritchie to be on top form to get the ball to him in the 6 yard box
