Other clubs' transfers

They were ready to offer 700m to Mbappe for a year. If Al-Ittihad are serious Liverpool will struggle to turn it down. Say they offer 150m, that's a transformative sum for a player that's 31-year-old. If they can poach Benzema you better believe they can poach Salah.

The fees haven’t been super crazy. They bank on turning the players head. I think he goes for less than £120m.

Can't believe you think this is comparable to China and the MLS.

We'll see. We're all going to be here watching it all transpire.

Just to clarify though, what do you think is going to transpire?

The money (and power) machine behind the Saudi league is a completely different animal than that of China or the MLS.. those two leagues are incomparable to what’s going on here. Look at the names that have moved to Saudi in their first big transfer window, it’s different worlds man.

Anything could happen but I get the feeling that they will become serious players in world football within 5 years. They will stop at nothing to build and enhance the Saudi ‘brand’, fair play to them.

I've just been reading that the Saudi transfer window closes a week after ours, so that's a lot of managers and players getting unsettled over the next couple of weeks, with know hope of signing a replacement

He was homesick at Arsenal  !!

Merino went to Real Sociedad when he was homesick and he's taken his game to new levels.

Are we potentially one of the very few clubs that are going to be untouchable for any Saudi transfer? Was just thinking of the possibility of Bruno disappearing any time soon. Guessing it would be on our terms, right?

The fee we got for Maxi didn't do that much to suggest "our terms" to me

Not sure like. Was enough to allow us to buy 2 players and get a loan deal in without being above market value.

Haven't checked but was it a state club? Don't even know where he went to be honest. I wasn't very invested in the steak bake years so he's been mostly injured when I watch

Think most of the top players end up there eventually.

And it becomes a version of the super league where they all battle against each other on various teams.

And because so much top talent is there going against each other it will be incredibly popular.

Aye. Initially it'll be a golden sands retirement home for top players. And in 5 years it'll be like when you used to make your own teams on Pro Evo.

I think endgame is Saudi teams are involved in some type of international super league that supersedes the champions league.

You can’t replace Real Madrid and Man U, Juventus. But like City, Chelsea and potentially us - you can sit alongside them.

I think this is the most plausible scenario. Can’t see the Saudi domestic league ever becoming the most popular league. However, there’ll be a lot of top clubs that will like the money on offer from a Saudi-led super league. I think it’s almost guaranteed that SA will aim for that, what would stop it from happening? National leagues blocking entry to their clubs? Football is already ruined financially in lots of ways but if that came to pass I think I’d struggle to stay interested

Can't believe you're laughing at people's tunnel vision and come out with unsubstantiated stuff like this. You've no evidence to suggest there is much appetite to spend an entire career there.

A large proportion of the best players in the world are European and south american, they drink, their partners are lingerie models, pop stars...culturally it just doesn't make any sense. People say the best players will never move to Newcastle  imagine living somewhere that women under the age of 21 can't leave the house without a male guardian. Somewhere your gorgeous lingerie model wife can't work, can't go out partying. Anyone with their wages would rather live in London, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Munich, New York, LA...unless you're Muslim, of course, which seems to be the profile of player they're having success with signing.
