Toon No9
Think I read that when he was on form last season his distance covered and tackles were on par with Hayden. But could be wrong. The difference between Longstaff last season and this is between his ears. Expectations have been raised, opposition players are now aware of him, and he's under more pressure. A lot on here are blaming Bruce, but Longstaff is the only one whose form has dipped significantly, and I don't see that he's being asked to play a different role. He's in the middle of a second season syndrome, and isn't handling it properly yet. But I strongly believe he'll come good again. This is what exactly what I think. He will come good. I actually think the Longstaff brothers can become a good pairing in midfield. Think they will compliment each other really well. But they need more experience. A 3 man midfield of them and Almiron in a free role would be nice.
Gallowgate End
I bet Man Utd wouldn’t even pay 50p for him now

Tiresias
He's very young and he and his brother are not going to become super consistent brilliant players overnight

toon25
One of the things I saw under Rafa that we haven’t seen in a coach since Sir Bobby was that players were actually improving... We’re already seeing that player improvement isn’t happening under wuh Steve
joeyt
Been really poor this season
Guest
It was literally men against boys in midfield. They were torn through at will.
Newcastle Fan
Very poor game today, seems like with him playing on and off he's not able to get into games, always looking off pace but hopefully this will push him to be better. Agree that we won't see many players improving under Bruce.
KaKa
Actually feel really bad for him that he didn't get the move to Man Utd in the summer. His career will go down the toilet under Bruce.
Guest
Or maybe he’s just not that good? He played about 6-7 times last season. Abeid had a similar run under Pardew and looked as good. Sometimes it’s too easy to blame the manager for individuals.
xLiaaamx
Mehdi Abeid was a far superior footballer to Sean Longstaff.

AyeDubbleYoo
Midfield looked like I expected all season, which was unable to provide any protection or get anywhere near mobile opponents. But maybe this was a bad example.

xLiaaamx
He's not awful, but he was tonight. The worst thing was though he didn't play his position. He kept charging forward when he was the holding midfielder.
toon25
Brewcie doing a fine job of stagnating the development of one of the best youngsters we’ve had in years.
geordiedean
Crazy to think Man United were wanting to pay 35 to 40m for him should have bitten their hands off hes bang average Not a patch on Maddison at Leicester

geordiedean
Shut the fuck up writing him off I'm not writing him off I'm saying hes been hyped over a purple patch of 9 games last season into being a better player than he actually is Hes been nothing short of absolute dog shit this season
tgarve
Very very much about the formation yesterday aswel, 3-5-2 was dead years ago and offered no protection on the wings, their fullbacks were dragging our midfield out and this helped to expose both longstaffs
Cronky
He just looks generally hesitant. That pass back wouldn't have actually reached the keeper. It would have stopped 10 yards outside the penalty area. I think the sending off has affected him as well. Some of his tackling looks indecisive. But for all that, the potential is still there. He's a young local lad with expectation heaped on him, and he needs time to get his head back into gear again.
