He was like a 6/10 for me. Still bad with the ball, involved in petty stuff that wasn’t needed, but his combative style helps ensure midfield doesn’t completely capitulate when the others are playing worse.

He was the best of the three.

Even during his bad run of form I still maintain we are a better side with him playing , just gives us a lot of bite and other players will hate playing against him . We certainly wouldn't have rolled over in the derby if he was playing .

He just sets the tone.

Without him we are even frailer in the middle. He's really good at holding the ball, something no one else can really do.

I find that infuriating. It's football basics, but not many of our players are press resistant.

Is it really basics though? I think holding the ball under intense pressure from multiple players is an elite skill. It’s worth remembering that the greats of yesteryear never faced a coordinated press that even the weakest

When we play the better teams and try to press them, they pass it around us. They release the ball quicker before anyone gets a chance to jump on them. Or at least how it looks to me.

We. Are so dependent on his physicality to see games out. His ability to get around the pitch at good intensity.

With Howe I’m pretty much ‘it is what it is ‘ with his tactics and management style.  It’s pretty much proven and largely for me about whether we do it well or not rather than do it at all.

But I do think being reliant on this physicality has a ceiling.  I was thinking Wolte on for Joelinton to maybe play a bit more football would’ve been a good approach but like… that’s not Eddie’s style and he seemingly has no desire to pivot.  And Joelinton was 100% needed to keep doing what we were doing good enough.

I think Ramsey will need a full Howe pre season if he’s ever going to succeed here. He needs to up his physicality and presence in n a game.  I think Anderson toook a year or so to get there but then injury disrupted him

Joelinton now calling out the ownership for being slow as fuck on their decision making?

We are so back.

I said recently I thought the lack of progress was impacting the squad. The project feels like it’s stagnating and that will impact the players.

Needs said. We have an 8th ranked budget, 8th ranked ground capacity (and set to fall further down) and mid-ranked training facilities (if that). Winning the LC felt glorious, but feels there's no project to sell any more, no further upwards trajectory on the cards.

The problem is we are allowed to spend on stuff which makes no difference on the pitch, but not on the squad which could launch us into the stratosphere. That itself is a contradiction.
