Callum Wilson: offered 'incentive-based' contract extension (Ornstein)

Recommended Posts

Can't see it happening, the incoming recruitment will force him off the books regardless, and besides that he'll get loads of offers,

West Ham, Leeds, Mackems, I mean Danny Welbeck still does a Job for Brighton, when Wilson is fit he's a very good striker, I think he could even offer Brentford something, or back up to Solanke at Spurs, id actually rather have Wilson than Hojlund up top if I was a man Utd fan.

The guy will be inundated with offers.

What on earth? If the guy finds any kind of deal where he plays more than a handful of minutes I'd be amazed. Wellbeck is in a different league and Spurs would be insane to go anywhere near him.

Sometimes wonder if we're talking about the same guy.

I missread the title of the thread and thought it said: "Wilson offered intensive care based contract".

😂

I could get behind this provided it incentivised him not being on the pitch

Welbeck of today is way better than Wilson of today.  Today’s Danny Welbeck is about a good a backup striker we could have.

If there's certain players Eddie sees value in keeping around for experience on the training pitch and what have you then as long as we aren't paying too much no objection from me.

Obviously barring extreme circumstances he should be nowhere near the pitch on match day.

"Wilson said he chose to seek therapy about a year ago, a decision stemming from an argument he had with a Newcastle physio during a gym session.

The physio, who noticed a change in Wilson's mood and demeanour in subsequent days, suggested he would benefit from professional help."

Little did this silly physio know that these unresolved issues was the reason for his hunger to prove himself on the pitch.

Also, where do you reckon Ornstein gets his info? It's obviously agents. Agents who want to drum up interest in their player. This is nowt but smoking-out clubs who'll offer him a more certain and lucrative deal.

I'll eat my hat if he's a Newcastle player next season.

I've always felt Eddie wants him to stay and kept playing him to give him a chance to earn it.  Which he didn't and this is some desperate attempt to keep him. Seriously what PL club can you see coming in for him? It'll be a Championship club at best.

I think a lot of people are underrating the importance of culture building and consistency. I could understand the idea of Howe keeping Wilson around as he's done with other players in order to maintain the standards and help the younger or newer players get acclimated to the expectations.

Team culture is built over time and the standards that are set have to be maintained. If you don't have the benefit of having some of your best players having been in your team culture for years and years, you have to have help building it. Howe is in the process of doing that and keeping Wilson around - as long as he's not keeping better, younger players from playing - could be really beneficial to team building.

It makes sense if it's for those reasons.

Wilson doesn't strike me as the sort of a player who will be happy to just train and be a "good person around the training ground".

I'm not saying he's a bad egg, I'm just saying players like Dummett/Ritchie probably accepted they weren't ever going to play.

"Pay as you play" *sounds* harmless, but if its minutes instead of Osula then it's not harmless at all.

This basically. Osula caused far more problems in the space of 10 mins than Wilson has in half a dozen games this season. Not really sure why I am reading he will be offered any sort of deal today. Not what I was expecting, I thought yesterday pretty much drew a line under his career here.

Feel like I have an issue with culture driven reasons only with a few well liked players. We have played champions league and have full internationals on the books while keeping high standards and togetherness is important as at times its what has made the difference that the lads have found a new level and dug deep. Having a good culture is definitely made that possible. However we can't become stale we can't become a retirement home players like schar and BDB are the wrong side of 30 but can assist us on the pitch as has been proven this season.

We can't be fearful of rocking the apple cart in the team as we can't keep them here forever. He's 33 struggled to maintain fitness and now has forgotten where the back of the goal is. While he's better than nothing as I have said earlier if Isak got a bad injury and Wilson was leading the line our season would likely go badly as he can't be relied upon. We need competent pros who can do mins for tired legs but they still need to do well enough to carry the team should we need them to.
