Barry Glendenning has to the most annoying cunt ever like, thick as fuck

 I like Barry a lot but know that he, like many other Guardianers, have been very condescending towards Newcastle fans on this topic. What's he said now?

The bloke is a complete moron man, how can you have such a reductive outlook on sporting competition when your profession is literally sports journalism? You can essentially distill his argument to - if you're not at the bottom of the football pyramid, you've got nothing to moan about

Heaven forbid fans actually have ambitions for their team to be successful

His Mackem blinkers heavily inform his contrarian rhetoric and it's so painfully obvious. He'll still be pleading for sympathy for them without the esteemed logic that he applied to us.

Guardian journalists love us, don't they...

One good thing about being where we now are in all of this farce is that we can stop worrying about what newspapers, journailsts, BEin and gobshites like Keys say on twitter and in their columns as it will have no effect, one way or another. This is all about if/when the rule of law can resolve the issue. Opinions count for fuck all now.

Guest Cheesy Beans

so we're 100% sure that the saudis publicly "withdrawing" means the PL haven't just chucked it all in the bin are we?  i'd imagine notice would need sending the PL to stop the process, we know this hasn't happened do we?

The only thing they ‘withdrew’ was a bid which had expired a month before.

It’s still ongoing.

The PL haven't fucked themselves or painted themselves into a corner, they've simply been exposed for what they are.

In an ideal world, the regulatory body would be neutral, wouldn't be beholden to influential stakeholders or commercial interests and decisions would be taken on a purely objective level.

The premier league have shown themselves to be nothing more than a pliable instrument to be used by the rich and influential as a weapon to club down anyone that might challenge their elevated status.

Competition is dead, corruption is the rule and if you're not in the club then fuck you, you're not getting in.

They're not fit for purpose and need to be reformed.  Abolish the PL and bring the whole shebang back under the purview of either the FA or the government.

If the big clubs cry and fuck off to form a european super borefest then all the better.

The whole thing depends on whether there is a strong legal case that can be brought against the PL if they reject it or, just as importantly, refuse to make a decision one way or the other. All of the pressure from the fans and MPs will have no effect if there is nothing that can be done legally to force it through.

This is it. When you cut through the noise, the outrage (from all angles) and the bulllshit, this is what it's ultimately going to come down to. If there's no credible legal comeback on rejecting or refusing to make a decision then there is no way the PL are going to approve or negotiate potentially doing so in good faith.

That isn't happening now. It was, but the buyers blew them out of the water and exposed that tactic. Pretty much every outside body has said they need to explain themselves or come up with a decision, including the government.

The offer has been withdrawn the ball is in the PL's court, that's how PIF see things. But PL isn't playing. They've moved onto the strawberries and cream.

If anybody takes the PL to court they can probably get away with saying that the official announcement that it was orf, was enough to justify cancelling the test.

Sure, there is probably some legality that states they should wait for confirmation from the respective parties, but how long do they wait?

The government allowed them Project restart. See what the PL looks like without fans for the next 2 seasons.

This.

It doesn't matter who says what. If and when they do actually say something it'll be them telling us it's a confidential process, they stand by it and it wasn't succesful/buyers walked away.

They don't have to do anything, they don't have to be transparent about their process regardless who tells them to.  If they don't want to let them in, it's unfortunately up to them.

Debatable. Putting aside that a European Super League is unlikely to ever happen for several reasons, it's entirely reasonable to conclude that the top 6 need English football more than the rest of English football needs the top 6.

What's undeniable is that in taking so long and still not drawing a line under it, they have been negligent to NUFC.

The FA have proved to be equally corrupt/inept. The whole selling Wembley stadium fiasco in order to provide grassroots football with the money they should already have had, should have woken people up.

The EFL I don’t think are corrupt, just increasingly inept. I guess with the wage cap in the last week they have been stuck between a rock and a hard place. Do they want to continue as is and have clubs fold around them? Or do they want to prevent that with a wage cap, but in doing so make it harder for clubs to compete when they get further up the ladder?

An owners and directors test should be done by an independent board who are elected by clubs supporters trusts, such as the NUST.

The test should be the same across all the leagues, should be clear in what is an isn’t allowed, and have a definite end point. If a decision has not been reached by that definitive end point, then it should be assumed that the tests have been passed (in order to prevent the board from waiting out the period like the Premier League have done) and the board should automatically be disbanded and new members up for election.

A new board should be voted for at most, every5 years, with no board member being able sit on the board for more than 2 cycles. At least half of the board should be compromised of supporters club board members from various different clubs, with an equal representation from each league. This would mean that some board members may have to be changed every season.

As for the rest of the football organisation, where do you start?

No it wouldn't.  English football existed long before the premier league and it'll do just fine without it.

Fair enough, there might not be billion pound tv deals or £50 a month sports subscriptions but football will get along just fine without the premier league.

Anyone in a hurry to watch Villa vs Fulham?

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with the PL showing it’s true colours and showing themselves as a farcical organisation but without those big clubs English Football would be of a much lower standard.

Yes, for starters Villa and Fulham fans. The top 6 aren't the be all and end all in English football and there are other clubs who have big fanbases such as Villa, ourselves, Everton, the mackems, Leeds, Sheffield clubs, West Ham.

Villa vs Fulham also becomes a lot more attractive to the neutral when the league as a whole is more competitive and it's not just about the battle for 15th.

Granted the overseas interest and tv money won't be the same but that's a hit English football could take in the medium to long term- just means squad players who mainly sit on the bench will have to settle for a more reasonable wage than 50k a week plus to do so. Big loss.
