Because if you don't have 12 teams you can't have three groups of four and end up with two groups of five and 8 out of 10 teams advancing. They always have guests, I love when the US is one. The "guest" teams usually come from Conmebol or AFC. I believe Mexico is the most invited "guest" team to play in Copa America. Yea but Mexico is at least on the American continent. Collage
Would make more sense to let teams from both Concacaf and Conmebol qualify and have a proper Copa America.

veriaqa
The "guest" aren't just "guest". To "qualify" the "guest" teams usually must win their respective continental competition final (AFC Cup or Gold Cup). For this year Copa America, Australia are the winner of AFC Cup 2015 and Qatar are the winner of AFC Cup 2019.

Ameritoon
That would be a bloodbath At this point I'd like to see the Copa America and Gold Cup combined. In an ideal Copa America the two guests teams would be the U.S and Mexico but it's not feasible to field a good enough team when we have our own tournament in the same summer. Now that the Confed Cup doesn't exist there's no real reason why they shouldn't be combined to make a larger tournament.

What’s an optimal number? 12? Would 16 work? I can’t see omitting Costa Rica, but things start getting pretty thin in concacaf after that. Mexico, US, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, and Canada/Jamaica.

Nobody
Do they ever "invite" European teams to the Copa America? Would be fun to watch someone like Serbia who are decent but failed to qualify for the Euros how they'd fare over there. Obviously would devalue Copa America too much to have some European losers just enter their competition instead

Obviously would devalue Copa America too much to have some European losers just enter their competition instead Spain was supposed to be in it for 2011, but pulled out due to wanting to give their players a proper break after playing in the Euros, Confederation Cup and World Cup in three straight years. Would've been interesting to have them at their peak competing in it.
