Conte would be the kind of statement of intent appointment I would hope they are looking to make.

If we have to go for someone domestic/less favoured, we could do a lot worse than to look at Potter or Brendan Rodgers. Would favour those two a hell of a lot more than Howe, Gerrard, Lampard, Southgate etc.

Are we looking for a top manager though? Or are we looking for someone to take us up a few levels?

The consortium have talked about gradual improvement and how many top managers are going to want to work with a squad of Joelintons?

We may not be able to get a top manager, but that doesn’t mean Gerrard is in the next group. Winning the championship for example is far more impressive to me than winning the SPL with an old firm side.

Why is Lampard being touted? He did OK at Derby with his million loanees and then underwhelmed at Chelsea (by their standards).

I honestly think it's just a default to mention Lampard if Gerrard comes up these days.

This. Also spent a boatload and failed to get a cohesive team. Tuchel turned up and turned it around immediately with the same players.

Lampard the new Curbishley? [emoji38]

"Oh shit we've used John Gregory, better balance out the fates with a Curbishley to keep the Great Old One happy"

He’ll be lucky to get any premier league job next IMO.

He's the reincarnation of Steve Bruce, he'll be getting jobs he doesn't deserve.

I look at it in tiers:

Tier 1- Worldies like Conte etc

Tier 2- People who would quickly take us too a higher level in the medium term, Rodgers, Emery etc.

Tier 3- Ones who we would have snapped your hand off two days ago but now seem underwhelming. Lampard, Potter, Howe.

The problem with the Conte shout is that the guy lives to win the league and compete for trophies... immediately. He falls out with clubs when that stops being their instant objective or when he feels they're not putting in the same effort to achieve it. Chasing European positions is not what he wants to do. As such, I'm not sure he'd want the job.

I’d love Conte here, it would be a real statement, but kind of pointless as he’s not a project/rebuild manager, you appoint him to win the league/CL not to keep a club up then look to finish maybe top 8-6 the following season and then top four the next, which by that time he’ll be off. Howe makes a lot of sense, knows some of the players, has worked with Jones, is available and I think he’d keep us up.

Roberto Martinez odds on favorite right now. Flurry of activities on him in the last couple of hours.

His odds have shortened but I can’t see anywhere where he’s odds on
