This cycle of the proect is well and truly over. Very big rebuild needed. Not just a GK, fullback and CM, that's treading water.

We exaggerate the ability of the squad when we're on form and downplay it when we're not.

Said in the match thread but how he could have watched the game on Saturday and decided to play Trippier in the same position is baffling.

Never mind the decision to bring Ramsdale in from nowhere.

Both at fault for the first 2 goals, killed the tie and fucked it.

Trippier has been bad but it’s not the same position and not many options. No idea what Ramsdale did wrong on the goals.

Lets see how that works out…

Just run the players to the ground and hope they get some confidence 😂

The beatings will continue until morale improves 😂

That and that the first choice eleven is nigh on exactly the same one 2 seasons ago. PSR mainly to blame for that one but also the totally wrong profiles signed in the summer in every regard beside Thiaw. (who tbh the jury is back out for for me. Makes too many goal costing mistakes)

agreed with the rest of the post but I can’t lay blame at at Thiaw’s feet for looking half the player he did earlier in the season tbh. He’s played every minute of every game for months now. Him and Hall (and Trippier c/o being 35) are the ones who’ve got genuine excuses that they have to play every minute of every game and it’s physically become impossible for them.

We miss Schar for a variety of pretty important reasons imo, but a big one of those is that Thiaw’s having to play too much.

You took a ridiculously polarised stance and then claimed you were simply criticising Howe. Something like...

"Eddie has got ut wrong tonight"

Or

"Why has he gone man to man v City?"

...probably wouldn't have been drawn much argument, for example.

But I am criticising Howe? He’s got it wrong more than he’s got it right this season.

He’s got it right more than he’s got it wrong in his tenure here.

They’re two completely different things.

And we have a game pretty much every 3 or 4 days in February, away at Qarabag then away at City again 3 days after [emoji38]

It's easy to say "got it wrong" but I just don't think any plan would've kept us in the tie tonight with the players available and with confidence already being low.

There are plenty of times he's got it wrong this season (IMO), but tonight he was pretty much fucked no matter what.

Its not an automatic cop out because its Man City/Liverpool

Were probably the worst opponent they've had their to date, Exeter aside, Wolves only lost 2-0 there and 2-1 at Liverpool.

Were not good like, at our end, irrespective of the opponent.

Tonight is not the night, I agree. There's always the next game for that.

Summer window is what's costing him.  Doesn't look like we have spent £250mil

The failed attempts at signing Ekitike and João Pedro this summer..  If we signed them would they have been misfits?

We had no DoF in place.

What about the rest of team he has previously brought in Hall, Bruno, Isak, Tonali, Livra, Botman.. etc he knows how to spot a player.

Sometimes signings don't work out.

The lack of DoF was huge, but surely it wasn’t a complete blank piece of paper they had to work from. It’s rehashing the debates of the summer, but we concentrated on long shot targets we’d lose out on if any of the ‘big 6’ went after them, and over priced players with PL experience. Other PL clubs did well shopping abroad, one not very far away. I don’t think the manager gets a free pass given he wanted more control, regardless of the mess upstairs.

No, they would've been great signings.

We cant afford duds. Wissa, Elanga and Ramsey were crazy deals. No value and not at the level we want. Obviously he and the club were in a very tough position. However, to go from a player like Ekitike to Wissa is madness. There should've been a better alternative to Ekitike, he'd already turned us down once, it shouldn't be unexpected for him to do it again.

Divnt kna about you, but I expected more than this tbh. Did not expect to pull back the deficit but this is rough like.

The result tonight hasn’t moved the dial re Howe for me.  The same issues are there as at any other time this season - and it was always a massive ask to beat Man City in a SF, never mind after a 0-2 deficit from the home leg.

There are problems - some aren’t on him, some are.  He still needs the time and opportunity to fix them given what he’s done before - which means finishing this season.  But he shouldn’t get the whole of next season for me - and might not get next season at all if his proposed fixes for next season are basically ‘more of the same’.

Aye, I do think we are an average side tbh.

Eddie needs to find a proper leader on the pitch to support Bruno… a centre half who directs play and motivates players on the pitch, demanding better at all times…

love BDB but he’s too nice and not the answer…

every time a goal goes in they’re all just looking at each other… with one exception, Lewis Hall… at least he actually seems fucked off by it…

Season is gone if Villa beat us in the cup, think home games, particularly a certain derby match will decide if he’s here next year.

Has to be signs of improvement during run in, or think mutual parting of the ways will be likely outcome.

Think I would take the loss of Howe if it meant that the people in charge had a clear plan and ambition. He will always be a fondly remembered figure but I am so fucking bored with his team now.

We need to be miles away from using Sunderland games as a marker of anything

I agree. I do understand the "give them time" sentiment for Elanga, Ramsey and Wolte (based on historical transfer success), and I also understand the external reasons for the summer going to fuck, but I do think it's pretty cut and dry at this point that the money spent didn't bring in what we needed for this season.

There's a huge amount of work to do in the summer.
