Any advances on 4th best CB this season and not better than Jamal Lascelles?

Lascelles has made 2 appearances so 5th best for me like

It feels like his performances are viewed through the prism of backing Isak at times.

Schar put in some absolute stinkers last season and didn't receive this level of criticism.

That’s because he has a huge amount of credit in the bank, surely? Whereas Big Sven had a good season, then was woeful/injured for ages, and is back now but hardly pulling up any trees.

Think the 4th best CB is bang-on, mind, but obviously the Lascelles bit is insanity

Yes and no.

Don't get me wrong, I love a bit of Fab, he's an incredible servant but he was genuinely poor for spells last season.

I thought Botman was excellent early doors next to Thiaw, he's had a couple poor showings where the whole team has been pretty woeful and he's been dragged over the shop, but he's still the least of our problems really.

But then after Brighton he was getting pelters for a goal that came about from rubbish play from Tonali, with some bizarre suggestions that he thinks he's too good for the club. He's certainly on the shit list with some.

I think he's been mostly good this season, long term I do worry about his pace and concentration.

I'd probably prefer Burn in there at the moment but I don't feel like it's as cut and dry as other posters in here do, and last week I would've said the opposite. There's only really Thiaw who has been completely consistent and switched on for us this season across the entire pitch, so it's hard to single out Sven for a couple of iffy games.

While he was clearly at fault for the 3rd could it on part be explained by the switch from Pope to Ramsdale? We all know Pope is a very active keeper in terms of coming off his line, so Botman may have partially got used to him sweeping situations like that up. Hence the slow reaction.

Remember the disruption the switch from Pope to Dubravka caused two years ago because of the exact same reasons.

Typical of our fans to turn on one of our best players this season for a poor error when he was being dragged all over the shop.

I'm not keen on this either since I think he's one of our real top tier players. He's going to have the odd bad game, that's the nature of his job.

Botman was 100%, yes 100% at fault for the 3rd goal. Total lapse in concentration. No, nothing to do with Ramsale coming on for Pope. If you watch the highlights again, you will concur

Not digging him out because he didn’t play, but if Burn is here for next few seasons as a back up LCB, what are peoples feelings on giving Botman that big new deal?

Is he someone we should 100% commit too, or is there an argument we’ve seen the best of him and if a reasonable fee is there, we could get a CB that has a higher ceiling? I like him at times, but then others he can look so cumbersome.

He’s rightfully fourth choice based on performances and reliability over the past two and a bit years. It’s genuinely insane how good our CB pool is for this to be the case.

I can see Botman improving with form and time. I think Burn's at the end. Happy to see Schar & Thiaw start if yesterday is the standard but I think he should be next in line.

That’s probably how I see it, age will catch up with Burn (as brilliant as he has been)

I think Botman has been mainly good when played, not to the same standard pre injuries, and some poor moments, but the criticism has been exaggerated imo.

I still think on ability alone he is first choice with Thiaw, so I’d be keeping him, as I am confident he can reach those levels again consistently.

I’d love him to stay. But depends on what he is asking for. Bruno is our highest earner, I think? Based on reports anyway. That’s probably deserved if true. Gordon allegedly next, which isn’t deserved.

If he wants somewhere in that bracket. I don’t think he would deserve that for his role within the team and his injury history. But at the same time, Burn and Schar aren’t getting any younger. So we’d be replacing 3 CB’s in a short space of time.

I think he has mainly been brilliant in the CL this season. But had some iffy games in the league.

Him and Thiaw are undoubtedly the future and are close enough to be the now as well. It’s fantastic to have to top Pros to come and we should use them but not overuse them.

Thiaw & Botman. Let them develop into a great partnership.
