Odd, been riddled with injuries, and worse, he's gone from looking like an elite clubs lynchpin to looking like he's trying to show off the new flaws in his game. Hope and pray he gets back, that was the best Newcastle center back I've seen, granted it was a very short time period, but has looked a shell since. Where he was deceptively quick and agile (considering he's a fridge with legs) now the movement, positioning, composure, it all looks calamitous, and you get the sense he knows it and doesn't trust himself. Reminds me of the Fernando Torres situation, hopefully he rebounds. Hopefully its a contract that doesn't hang around our neck for the duration if he isn't good enough.

That's the spirit.

He has just returned from injury and was very, very good as recently as earlier this season. People have extreme short-term memories.

Even if we want to sell eventually, a new contract preserves his value.

Bit of a surprise. I rate him but I don’t think we’re ever going to be able to rely on him staying fit, especially playing twice a week.

He's not been at his best the last couple of games (though not as bad as made out IMO) but apart from that he's been class for pretty much the whole time he's been here.

Only worry for me is obviously the injuries, but (finger crossed) if he's over the worst of them I think he and Thiaw could become a really good pairing going forward.

Plus with all our other CBs all being super old / injured / super old and injured, we could do without having to sign yet another CB.

We can't only (try to) extend players when they are in the form of their life. That's when they are getting other ideas or will have unrealistic wage demands.

We'll just have to trust the club, and most notably Eddie, that they don't feel he's a permanent injury risk or has lost something due to the injuries. With that in mind this is great news.

I think he's a top, top player so I am delighted. I'm trusting our doctors don't believe he's finished, or that his injuries have caused him permanent damage like some have speculated.

Hear me out: An accepted new contract for one of our top players sends a powerful message to the rest. We're actually holding onto a top player and will do so with the others.

Makes sense to me

You literally only have to flip back a few pages on this thread to go to a period in time this season where basically everyone in complete consensus that we needed to resign him ASAP and were in danger of losing him to a big club in the summer.

Would be lunacy not to extend. Lascelles is finished. Schär is 34 and out of contract, Burn will be 34 later this season and is out of contract next year. We could do without having to recruit 3/4 CBs like.

That's before we get onto the fact he's a class player and was demonstrating that he's arguably the best in the squad as recently as earlier this season.

Thought he would be offski after his pal went last summer

Always thought he was one of those who had mapped out his career and would move on quite quickly

Guessing the injuries have cooled the interest of the "bigger" clubs as well as him not looking the Rolls Royce he once did

Yea. This summer coming, we only want to sign one CB, not two. Then in 2027 the options will be:

1) Extend Burn deal because he’s still a useful squad player and sell Botman, because he’s been 2nd fiddle to Burn (contract extension preserves value) and we sign a top CB.

2) Botman is back to 22/23, Burn is a natural time to let go, we sign a young CB.

3) We keep both because of PSR still restricting us, after we’ve blown money elsewhere.
