What a treat.

Just a funny mention, but one of the best sports surgeons in Europe has a clinic one floor below our office here in Finland. Very often he posts photos to Instagram about the players he has operated ( Barcelona and AS Roma players, ter Stegen for example). I always hope to bump to some player on the elevator or whatever. Never fking happens [emoji38] Would be class to see Hugo there this week.

Could even be longer.

Struggling to see how a footballer returns to the top level after that.

It's a truly awful injury, I doubt it'llfinish him at the top level, he'll still be a good player but it'll certainly be a career diminisher if not a career ender. He still has youth on his side so he'll likely recover quicker than most but who knows what psychological toll will be

Was reading about Kimpembe earlier. Got injured in February 2023 but didn’t undergo surgery until January 2024. Returned to action in February 2025.

Could be a long time for Hugo.

He won’t be very mobile, if you fancy hoying the heed in to the beak of the Geordie-phobe.

I had mine done, similar scar to the picture above.

Wasn't a full tear but apparently it had split open along the vertical access like a zipper so they couldn't do it orthoscopically and had to do a large incision.

When I came in for my first post op meeting the doctor saw me and kind of chuckled like "oh yeah that one" when he recognized me. Feel like you don't want to have a memorable surgery.

Was a full year before I could return to athletic activities, full six weeks no weight bearing at all.

I'm sure it will be less for a footballer but there's no way he plays next season.

A mate of mine was a councillor in London and on a town-twinning exchange visit with a suburb of Athens. They took him to the 2004 Athens Olympic Stadium and he asked if he could have a run on it. Tried to do a 400m (he was in his early 50's) and his achilles snapped as he entered the home straight. He said it sounded like a gun shot.

Fortunately, one of the leading achilles surgeons in Europe is in Athens (ironically) and was a personal friend of one of the dignitaries he was visiting. Fitted him in for surgery the next morning and he was walking in a boot when I met him about three weeks later. He had an incredibly quick recovery, but that was only for walking and he never played sport again (he was about to pack in anyway).

The only issue he had was convincing his insurer that he hadn't done the injury in the UK and flown to see that specialist specifically (due to his reknown).
