Am I not buying it or just thinking it was a stupid decision?

Well my initial phrasing of the question was "do you not buy it, or do you just think they're stupid" but thought that would contradict my assertion that I wasn't being snarky.

Fair enough. Without knowing the ins and outs of our financial wiggle room, personally I don't think it's a stupid decision to safeguard our summer budget, assuming investing in full-back cover would've had a meaningful impact on that.

Getting further into CL and higher up in the PL brings in a lot of money you know.

And most importantly creates future fans.

Well like I say, I'm not gonna pretend to know the financial implications of each permutation, but they've obviously taken the view that there wasn't a FB on the market in January who would've been worth the outlay, factoring in the impact on the summer budget.

We don't have the luxury of just buying and buying if signings don't work out; the next FB we get will have to be a genuine first team prospect in the long-term imo.

We can say it's a good plan because it "maximises the budget for summer" but it behooves us to acknowledge that there was an element - of what size I guess is also up for debate - of risk to it. And I don't think that's just hindsightism on my part; even before the window opened people were braying for new, fresh, supple young bodies to be added to the harem given our injuries and schedule ahead. Trouble might never have found us but it knew our address.

Scenarios like that had to have been baked into the thoughts in the decision; not that Bruno necessarily would be the one with a long term injury but that 1 or 2 "purples" going down would tank the season.

Obviously neither of us can know for certain what the rest of the season will bring, but I think a Bruno-less runout is highly likely to result in a finish outside of European places with no silverware. And what that does to both our ability to fend off bids for the talent we have and get new talent in is, imo, a worse outcome than having spent before we wanted to if it may have kept us in the running for those spots.

On the flip side there's absolutely no guarantee fresh bodies would have prevented or saved anything at all and I will totally agree/concede that that's a gamble too. But it was the one I would have been more comfortable with us taking.

And one we were interested in went under the knife.

Ossie’s babes promised much, another false dawn at the time unfortunately.

Watson, Clark, Elliott, Howey were all part of a side which came close to winning the league and were part of the team which had our highest finish(es) in seven decades.  Not sure that’s failed promise.

Howe needs to prove he can actually win a game without Bruno.

Part of me does wonder if Howe was just being carried by Bruno and Isak

Any thoughts following this ebening's game?

glad we got the 'never won without him' off our backs straight away now, so its not being talked about constantly. Miss captain obviously, but glad they have done it tonight without him

Going to be a big miss, but I do feel this will give the rest a little more license to step up and try and make things happen without everything going through Bruno. Hopefully, they all step up and we get the results needed while he is out
