Blaydon is solid black and white Newcastle territory as is most of south Tynedale, the Derwent Valley and North West Durham. They always have been.

It looks and feels like a Newcastle suburb, which is hardly surprising considering it's on the edge of town.

Blaydon Races by GEORDIE Ridley? Oh yeah, totally a mackem anthem.

They have some truth in what they say though, albeit skewed, as Blaydon was part of County Durham way back in the past.

"Dinnit knaa why they sing Local Hero. Glasgow, marra!"

"Dinnit knaa why they sing Blaydon Races.  County Durham, marra!"

If having a local link is an important part of a club's anthem, then what the fuck is the connection with Wise Men Say, or Ready to Go?

Saw a TikTok back and forth a while back where a Mackem was just picking and choosing when something was classed as County Durham or not depending on their love for gerrymarrading.

Blaydon? Not Newcastle, was part of County Durham. Washington? Nah that's Sunderland. Wallsend? Traditionally that's County Durham marra. Sunderland itself? Nah, was never part of County Durham, that's Sunderland.

The Blaydon Race of 1862 as per the song, was held on Dent's Meadow Island which was in the district of Newcastle. Ergo, the Blaydon Races were not held in County Durham.

Hence my part about having some truth, albeit skewed. Pretty sure it was the King's Island (or known as that). I didn't google it though, I'm just going off what I remember from my own knowledge.

There are references to Newcastle literally all the way through it  barely a verse that doesn't reference exactly where it's about

Scotswood Road

Balmbra's

Collingwood Street

Blaydon

Armstrong's Factory

The Robin Adair

The Chain Bridge

Blaydon Mechanics' Hall

It was well known that it was first sung during an event at Balmbra’s.

Absolutely minced in the head of you think it’s not associated with Newcastle, much like the new generation of Man Utd fan who actually think Busby’s aces was the original song.

There were precisely TWO mackems at Blaydon comp when I went there.

First one - CDT teacher. Actually from Sunderland, decent bloke actually.  For a mackem :bluestar:

'Mackem' #2 - contrarian little shit who 'supported' Sunderland just to try and be different, never went to one match as far as I know.

Never once seen one of these cunts wearing their colours in the Blaydon / Winlaton area. Or heard that wretched fucking accent

Edit: I know this isn't the arguement being made but I wouldn't put it past them to retcon any of this area into being some kinda former stronghold, dafties.

It's a fair bit closer to Newcastle than it is Sunderland... Flogging myself there in the rain on Monday night confirmed it :)

The original Blaydon races were rowing events on the Tyne from Newcastle to Blaydon or at least that is what a play at the Theatre Royal taught me a few years back...

The Blaydon Races were horse races.

Rowing was massive on Tyneside in the mid-C19th, and the world’s best rowers came from the area - but they weren’t the Blaydon Races.

I bet they'll be working themselves up into a right little moody this weekend with Sam Fender playing at St. James' starting tonight.

Fake stories, fewm and dummy spitting will be in full flow for the next few days and then into next week until they make up something else NUFC related to be angry about.

"The wife's sister's best mate went to school with him. Hated football marra" etc. etc. Daft fuckas.

I see they have started banging on about expanding the stadium, conveniently since bald cunt Edwards x post. The amount of thick fuckers (or is that blind) going on about their 41,000 average last season. No mention of their club lying with the official figures by a good few thousand and a half empty ground for midweek matches (3/4 empty for cup). It stick out like a sore thump the blocks of seats totally empty and every game. To be fair there are more than a few saying there's no need for an extension, so they're arguing amongst themselves about it.
