Sunderland has never, ever, in history ever been known as "the city by the sea", by anyone. They are so desperate to create some kind of positive identity. In that role, Beardsley is out on his own. It’s as though they’ve not watched the likes of Rob Lee play. They pretty much agree that Lee Clark was absolutely fantastic for them, he was better for us but had to move to get game time as he had Lee & Batty ahead of him. There’s another one; Batty, a better player in the role he played than Sunderland have had in the Premier League.
