Glad Eddie won’t be as trigger happy. I just love the way you said they can’t play against the top half teams after just 45 minutes of a pre season friendly, also the first time the have played together, oh and also in a completely different formation. Again, some knee jerk observation there.

And with Tonali only having had under 45 mins of playing time with us in total. And he likely only met Bruno last week.

And that’s without taking into account that he’ll only have had a couple of meaningful training sessions with the team to work out how we play and where he fits into that.

Players will be rusty as fuck for a while yet.

They had nigh on there best eleven out for the majority of the game and the tactics has been drilled into them. We didn't have our best eleven out and we're trying out a new formation for the first time. I'd say we atleast matched them. and two penalties not replayed at a good angle is canny bad like for a premier league tournament.

Just watching the recording of the game on sky now. Got to half time, they are doing a recap of the first half highlight, but it’s set to dramatic pirates of the Caribbean style music.

don’t like it. ? although doesn’t feel as weird as that time the MOTD staff are walked out over lineker and there was no commentary.

That American commentator had to be a Villa club plug. When commenting on Emery and his players he was on the cusp of ejaculation multiple times

Wasn’t it Tim Howard?

Hanging with @SEMTEX @LFEE and @Ameritoon and seeing just countless Toon fans from all over the world at the match was outstanding. Random folks from all over North America who love the Toon. Young fans, old fans. Amazing stuff. Had not seen that before in my life. Always felt us as some smallish rogue fan base over here and we probably still are in comparison to the Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United fan bases but we felt massive yesterday. Welling up with pride.

Not sure what the boos were about at full time.

Think it was aimed at the ref for ending the game when the ball went out for a corner to Villa.

That other lad for you (forget his name, Neophyte-Interpol or whatever it was. Was on loan at Cardiff last season) had quite the shot on him. Looked a good prospect too.

Philogene-Bidace.

Weird that, last year he said he wanted to be known as Philogene, but last night he had the whole name on his kit.

Yes, he hasn't really had much coverage here in terms of the kids, it's all been about Archer and (Aaron) Ramsey.

Emery seen something he likes, by the look of it.

Hot take from Hope. He thinks we played a different system yesterday so Villa wouldn't be drilled on our opening day tactics.

I thought it was obvious. Eddie has probably watched that game at Villa Park numerous times and if he thinks he's found a solution he's not going to use it in a friendly couple of weeks before the real thing.

Edward is crafty, like. Villa arguably beat our press better than anyone other than Liverpool and Arsenal last season and the shape change was perhaps a way to try a different press pattern to see how Villa's movement and passing changed without being able to prep for it.

However the shape change didn’t work ?

Wouldn’t be surprised if we press Villa

less in the league game, to allow less space for their midfielders to get on the half turn and play a through ball.

Hopefully stay goal-side of their CMs and defenders being ready for that instant pass forward will be enough to nullify a lot of their threat.

Looking forward to seeing it anyway. Last night wasn’t very representative.

Villa will have a big problem this year with the ball over the top, unless they drop their high line.

That's exactly what everyone was saying last season. As we conceded a total of 8 goals in the last 16 matches.

Agree. They turned our MF press and then had space to play the forward counter. Would not be surprised if we nullify that by not pressing.

Very good to meet you at the game and your lovely family. As you say, the numbers and enthusiasm are on a rapid rise. Just wait until we win something, which I feel is coming. It will be epic!!

Makes it all the more tragic you conceded 3 last night to Jacob Murphy playmaking.

In all seriousness, were you playing as high as that last season?!
