I find our approach to these 2 games in 2 days a bit odd. We basically play a mish mash of first team regulars and reserves in both, but surely we'd be better off playing our reserves against Espanyol and a first choice 11 against Atletico. Our first choice team hasn't actually played together during all of pre season

Eddie doesnt like to give anything away tactically. This forum mainly thinks we were shite all pre-season so hopefully Villa underestimate us...they certainly won't know our exact game plan come Saturday

We did exactly the same thing in the last two Sela cups though

The first Sela Cup had a weird League season format though where you wanted points for goals scored as well as a win.

This one and last years have been Friday night friendlies, with a Saturday night Sela Cup.

I think until late on they struggled to sell tickets. We ended up with 32k there on Friday night, but so think it may lead to a change in policy in future. I think we might end up with having a friendly against the bigger team on the Friday night, and then Sela Cup against a lesser team on the Saturday. This way people will go out of their way more to get to the Friday match, but the ability for people to go to the Saturday game, especially for families will keep the attendees up for that.

No Bruno, no Schar/Burn, and Livramento played on the left with Trippier on the right, and Hall on the bench.

Yes, you are right. I'm into my second bottle of Sauvignon blanc.

I don't do impressions, my area of expertise is sitting on my arse on a Saturday.

First prize to Bimps, paraphrasing "Airplane" lines. Good one.

Yeah, it's interesting.

I wonder if it's to make things more challenging for the first team players that feature, while also having the squad players play alongside some first team players too, so they have to play up to a higher level.

I see some teams play full second teams against other teams full second teams, and it's probably not ideal preparation for these players if they have to come into the first team for whatever reason, once the season starts.

I feel like we did the same the season before last and then we spanked Villa 5:1 in that opening game. Things may be different this time around thanks to Isak's bullshit and not having another striker.

I came to the game late, and there were problems with the feed which meant that I didn't see all that much of the game. However, what I did see of Harrison Ashby in centre midfield was impressive. On that showing, I'd definitely have him in the squad.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Newcastle United are exploring the possibility of a high-profile pre-season friendly against Everton in Edinburgh this summer, according to The Chronicle. While still in the early stages of negotiation, the match would be hosted at Murrayfield Stadium, which boasts a capacity of 67,144.

Given the short distance and large ticket allocation, the fixture would be expected to be a major draw for fans. However, club officials are still considering several domestic options before finalising the summer schedule.

Our summer plans are beginning to take shape with a mix of domestic and international fixtures:

🇪🇸 La Manga, Spain: The squad is expected to head to the south of Spain for a warm-weather training camp. This marks a return to the facility for the first time since 2016, with a match against La Liga opposition currently under discussion.

🏁 St James' Park Showcase: To boost attendance following several years of lower-key friendlies, Newcastle United are in talks to host AS Roma. The club is keen to move away from the flat atmospheres of recent years—such as the 2024 fixtures against Girona and Brest—by bringing in European heavyweights.

The commercial team is under pressure to deliver 'prestige' matches to fill the stadium, noting the disparity in recent friendly turnouts:

🇪🇸 Atletico Madrid 51,584
🇫🇷 Stade Brest (2024) 33,760
🇪🇸 Girona (2024) 31,958
🇪🇸 Espanyol 30,782

The prospect of a trip to Edinburgh or Spain is certainly an exciting prospect. However, the fixture list remains fluid as Newcastle's commercial and coaching staff finalise the logistics for the 2026/27 build-up!

Edinburgh would be class, but I’m going to assume it will priced at tourists rather than fans.

If that happens, I hope we play home games at Murrayfield when Hibs are at home, fuck their crowd instead of Hearts’.

Can’t see why we’d be playing a one off pre-season game 90 mins up the road at a neutral venue against mid table PL opposition.

It’s either testing the logistics of a temporary home stadium, or a conciliatory olive branch to that school from Dundee.
