For people who weren't there it might not make sense but what Keegan did for this club means more than any trophy.  What he did here, when he did it, and the man he is, puts him top tier no matter what anyone else may achieve.

If Eddie keeps winning trophies for us then I think he will genuinely move ahead of KK. But yeah, I get the sentiment. You had to be following NUFC pre-1992 to understand the Keegan transformation. The current version of NUFC still remains to be KK's invention.

Is not harsh on Dalglish as well? The club being floated as a PLC didn’t help with the transfer spend (though bringing in his old Liverpool mates Barnes and Rush amongst others didn’t help) but he did get to an FA Cup final as well as doing well with Keegan’s team in the games he had in 1996-97. Only lost twice in the league allowing us to get 2nd and therefore CL. Famous games under him too; 4-3 v Leicester, 5-0 v Forest, 3-2 v Barca.

Someone who was alive for his tenure could probably correct me.

Nah, he deliberately dismantled us, and did so by buying aging players off Liverpool and giving them free money.

Went from challenging for the title to relegation battle and from playing the best football in the country to the most boring in the space of a year.

He had way more money to spend that people think, approx 31m in nineteen month, of largely dismal transfers.

Set us back as a club massively and deserves to be right down there.

I'd say he and Souness did the worst jobs out of the lot. Absolutely wrecked good teams and good situations. None of the rest inherited good situations.

There’s a video animation somewhere of what Dalglish did to KK’s side. Keegan spat his dummy out; but we had a good team. Dalglish came in, brought in his mates, his son and made us very ordinary. We finished 2nd due to other teams blowing up and we got to the 1998 FA Cup final with a dream route.

Dalglish was a disaster for us, a world away from his Blackburn side.

Another thing about Dalglish was that he never seemed remotely interested in managing us. He was aloof and dismissive, rude to the press in a way that soured our entire profile as a club. Just a shit appointment at the exact moment we needed a good one.

Talking of 1992, I found this recently...

Thoroughly grim times as you say. It's incomprehensible that less than two years later we would be up in the Premier League and regularly ripping teams a new arsehole. It can never be overstated just what an incredible job Keegan did, it was proper fantasy stuff.

S: Howe

A: SBR, Keegan

B: Benitez

C: Houghton, Roeder

D: Pardew, Allerdyce, Gullit, Dalglish

E: Souness, Kinnear, McClaren

Bruce: Bruce

If it was Premiership/Premier League games only then Hughton doesn’t count, and Benitez, Kinnear and Allardyce never even had one full season.

Benitez has 2 full seasons after the promotion.

All this has reminded of how we got rid of Benitez to replace him with Steve Bruce who then stayed for over 2 years...

Remember that, everyone?

He gets a lot  of unjust criticism, when people say dismantle it's almost like he got rid of a lot players at their peak. Beardsley was past it and Ginola was only good for the first six months here. Ferdinand sale was forced on him.

Yes, he brought in Barnes, Rush, and some bad strikers, one who was the lead forward for France when they won the World Cup, but he does have an eye for a player. Speed, Solano, Given, Hamman, Dabizas and Tommason were all his players even if the latter did not work out.

Look at Liverpool, he brought Suarez, Carroll, who would have been great without the injuries, and Henderson.

I look at some of the other managers, notably Souness, where there was just a series of terrible players.

We didn't get rid of Benitez. He left us. For China.

I'm sure his first transfer business was to sell Ginola for 2 million pounds and replace him with Des Hamilton for the exact amount of 2 million pounds. That alone deserved the sack!

One thing is being able to spot a talent, another is knowing how to utilize them.

Souness wanted Luis Boa Morte and Nicolas Anelka, but got Luque and Owen from Shepherd as they were more glamorous signings.

Even if Souness got his way, I don't see him doing any better than he did result wise.

Speaking of Souness, I can't think of a more corrupt transfer than Boumsong under Souness.
