Don't think Dubs is nearly as bad as some say. We'll be worse off without Pope, as any team who loses its first choice keeper to injury would be, but we'll be fine.

I want to be optimistic, but then the stats last season when Dub came in and we suddenly started to shift in more chances and goals says otherwise.

Either that just coincided with everything else going to shit, or we’re fucked. Because we’re conceding chances quite a bit already.

There are two desirable outcomes in my opinion: Dubravka comes in, plays well and we win the match, the obvious choice; or Vlachodimos plays and proves implausibly bad, tripping over his own feet and throwing the ball into his own net several times over. He can be this generation's Fumaca or 'Yohan Kebab', a cause to look back and laugh, the type of thing that over the long haul can really serve to bring a fanbase together. And after all, what's more important than that?

Gillespie literally doesn't count.

Then what the fuck is he doing here?

It's like the Jack Alnwick situation from a few years back. On our books but when he was finally called on, was letting anything on target fly in.

They want him for numbers in training. I have no idea why having 5 keepers as opposed to 4 is particularly beneficial in a training sense, but they seem to feel it is.

I think it's even numbers so a GK always has someone to train with.

Gillespie is there to just take shots in shooting practice.

You don't want the "main" keepers shattered from constantly having shots pinged at them for hours on end, plus it increases the chance of injury, so Gillespie is there mainly for that from what I understand.

Plus if you're shooting at Pope during shooting practice and he saves almost all of it it'll be quite demoralising. If you're shooting at someone a bit shit then you'll feel like a superstar when everything half-decent hits the back of the net.

I think people underappreciate having players like Gillespie, Ritchie or even Dummett around the training pitch and amongst the group for support, morale, all that shit. To be fair that's also a coaches and leadership groups job too but it can help, especially when Trippier's gallavanting and Lascelles is long term injured.

Pope unavailable over Xmas, again

We should sign a keeper called Barbeque then he’d only ever be injured in the summer

Not unless he's from down under.

Us having to choose between Dubravka and the Greek lad is about as wonderful an example of PSR working exactly as intended as you'll get.

Instead of buying an upgrade on or quality understudy for Pope we've had to buy some lad that we don't want instead or else face a points deduction.

We'll doubtless drop points in the coming weeks now.

Great stuff, brilliantly organised sport.

It's another expose of the ridiculous blowback from PSR, that's the issue. I'm sure we'd all be quite happy to have players employed by the club as cheerleaders or human cones for that matter if money was no object. It's when we aren't able to buy players we genuinely need for the first team because we are balancing the books that people get pissed off.
